Repeated Sinus Infections - Please Help

I've had a history of sinus infections every 1 - 2 months since
December 2000.  Coughing from the infection caused me to crack 4 ribs.
Infections reoccurred in March and August of 2001 when I put in the
hospital because of the infection.  In 2001 I had a septoplasty, polyps
removed and various other sinus related procedures done.  In 2002 I
also started allegy shots, but they did not seem to do very much.  In
2003, I had a Caldwell-Luc done and multiple polyps removed.  After
this surgery, I had the CT scans looked at by a second ENT and they
felt that everything has been done that they can do to open things up
in my sinuses.  A recent CT scan showed that surprise....I have a sinus
infection!

As far as medicines go, I have been on Zyrtec, Zyrtec-D, Allegra,
Allegra-D, Claritin D, Flonase, Nasacort and others. The latest
allergist I've seen feels that most of my problems are from
non-allergic rhinitis with some allergic rhinitis issues and gave me a
prescription for Aerohist, Astelin, Advair and Nasacort.  I've done
Gentimycin washes, saline washes, etc.  Just recently, I purchased a
Grossan Hydropulse unit.  Unfortunately, I had another infection when I
received it in the mail so I don't know if it will help yet or not.

This is beginning to get very frustrating and it is difficult to keep
functioning at 100% with an infection every month or two.  I also worry
about what the repeated use of antibiotics will do to my body.

Does anyone have any advice on how to keep the infections away?

After I suffered with multiple sinus infections, year after year, for
decades, I experimented with flooding my nasal passages with an
anti-infective mixture that could kill germs and infection, without killing
me. I found a safe way, for me, to keep my forehead pointed down, for a few
minutes, with my nasal passages flooded with a mixture of diluted 3%
hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and kosher salt. Sinus flooding not only
killed my sinus infection, but also has kept myself infection free, without
having to use antibiotics.
.
I have now been sinus infection free for over 3 years. I think that my
chronic infection problems were associated with my turbinates, so the
anti-infective mixture worked very well, for me, since the infected areas
were fairly easy to reach.

First of all, I admire you to keep going as you have with this misery.
I have the coughing form of sinusitis too and it's been a long time
since I've been at peak efficiency.

I always wonder how sinusitis starts in the first place.  Did you have
sinusitis all your life, or did it start after some change to your
lifestyle?  Like did you start smoking or move to a new area or take a
new job?  Sometimes, lifestyle changes are the key to relieving the
inflammation in your sinuses.

Also, you need to get cultures of the secretions out of your sinuses to
find out what bugs are infecting you.  And this should include fungal as
well as bacterial, because (as you may have noticed from other posts)
Allergic Fungal Sinusitis is more common than previously believed.

I might add that since you've had sinus surgery you might want to get a
culture done by an ENT directly from your sinuses.  It has been my
experience that cultures of the mucus and direct sinus cultures haven't
correlated, except for coagulase negative staph, and there is
considerable debate about its role in chronic sinusitis since it is a
part of the normal flora.  You need to get sensitivities done also.

Kathyw,

When you say I need to get sensitivities done do you mean allergy
testing?

I've had minor sinus problems all my life, but nothing that couldn't be
controlled.  In 1996 I moved to the Houston, TX area and didn't have
any problems with infections until December 2000.  Nothing really
changed other than the area and a little more stress of having a
family.  I have never smoked although I have packed on a few pounds.
Until recently, I did not do any regular excercise.  Since January I
have been doing Tae Kwon Do for stress relief and excercise.

In 2001, we moved to Michigan but the infections started before the
move so I don't think that was the trigger.  In 2004, we moved back to
the Houston area and nothing has really changed.  I'm at a bit of a
loss as to why things got

I did have a culture done of my sinuses a few years back; however, I
don't remember the results.

By sensitivities I meant that if they culture something, they can see
which antibitoic it is sensitive to if its bacterial so youn wont's
keep using antibiotics that aren't effective.

I remember this being done once; however, it is not a routine event.
Should I get a culture taken every time I have an infection?

Does anyone else have any advice?
