Hi everyone-

Well, To try to explain my story........
I have had allergy/sinus infections for along time.
Each year they get worse though.
Last fall - I started with the constint cough.
I decided to go to the doctors in Feb of 2005.
He gave me meds. That helped for a while then
I relaps in March 2005. I went back - He gave me some
different meds. I relaps again. The doctor Then
Sent me to a specialist. (ear, nose, throat-doctor)
He put me on an antibotic and decongestive and also
gave me some nose drops. Well, That worked until
I finished that meds-Then I relaps. I got a bad migrain
for the first time. I called the specialist back after that.
He sent me for a cat scan of the Sinuses. Today- I went
back for a follow - up. My cat scan Show 1 side of the
nose (sinus path) is 100% blocked and the other is 1/2
to 3/4 blocked - He told me that I would have to have surgery.
I was quite shocked -I was not expecting that at all. He did
explain-He would be going up my nose(I guess they scrap
the goop out) then he would pack it - I would have to wear the
packing for 2 to3 days. I would be on antibotics and pain meds.
off work for 6 days. I was also instructed that I would have to sleep
on a wedged pillow. (How high do you have to be?) Also, I am a nurses
aid (at a hospital). But, Other nurses were saying not to drink out of
straws- Is that so? I am nervous..... If any of you have already gone
through
this.....Could you write just to let me know how you did?

After all this is over - The doctor was talking about sending me to an
allergist.

My surgery is scheduled for April 28th.

Well sinus surgery is well-established and is low-risk so I would not worry
about that as such.

But you will need to resolve the underlying allerfy issues for best long-term
results.

My Hubby has this done a few years ago.

He was so impacted wih pus from an infection that it had to be cleaned
out by surgery.

Now he uses Rhinocort nasal spray at night.

I'm not surprised at all.

Endoscopic (thru the nose) sinus surgery is what most of us chronic
sinusitis patients go thru at one time or another.

But like any surgery, I would have suggested that you get a second
opinion from another surgeon.  In my case, I ended up liking the second
surgeon better and so I had him do the surgery instead of the first one.

I never heard that.  What you should avoid, is eating hot food or
drinking hot drinks that could worsen bleeding.  Try to eat warm but not
hot things.

> I am nervous.....

As a nurse's aide, I'm sure you know that you will have an opportunity
to discuss your surgery with your anesthetist before it begins.  Tell
him that you're nervous.  They can administer a mild tranquilizer to
relax you before the general anesthetic kicks in.
