No more chronic sinus infections!!!  After decades of miserable infections,
allergy shots and surgery, caused by sinusitis, I finally have the condition
under control. I feel great!

I have found a method to effectively treat or prevent sinus infections.

I buy a plastic saline nasal spray, for about $2.50, at Wal-Mart and empty
it. I then fill the empty saline nasal sprayer with a pinch of baking soda,
a pinch of salt, 3ml to 5ml of ?common store bought? 3% hydrogen peroxide
and 50ml water. I never exceed 5ml of 3% peroxide to 50ml of water, or a one
to ten dilution of 3% peroxide to water AT MOST!

When I first started experimenting with the sinus irrigation, I used more
than 15ml of 3% peroxide and it really burned my sinuses and made them
worse. So I never use more than one part of peroxide to 10 parts of water.

Hydrogen peroxide can be very irritating to the sinuses, so I am very
careful with the mixture. If I use too much peroxide, to water, it makes me
feel like I have a head cold for several days, and, although it still worked
at getting rid of my sinus infection, it burned like hell and left me very
stuffy and sick feeling for several days.

To do the sinus irrigation, I kneel, and place the top of my head down onto
the floor of my shower and spray the contents firmly into my sinuses, which
are tilted upwards. It is really not as bad as it sounds. In fact, it beats
the HELL out of getting sinus infections and taking antibiotics.

I place my head on the shower floor so that my sinuses are facing upwards,
so that I don't swallow any of the mixture and so that I can let the mixture
soak deep into my sinuses. The more clogged my sinuses, the longer I keep my
head down on the shower floor, letting the mixture seep into my sinuses. I
want the antibacterial/cleaning mixture of peroxide, baking soda, and salt
to really soak into my sinuses. I shake the mixture occasionally and make
sure that I spray most of it into my "upside down" sinuses. I spray it into
both nostrils, and after they fill up, when I spray into one nostril it
comes out the other. I keep my head upside down on the shower floor for a
few minutes after the irrigation in order for the mixture to get deep into
my sinuses. I even shake my head and contort my face in order to help work
the mixture into the sinuses. I don?t know how much that helps, and it
probably makes me look like an idiot, but who cares-----, nobody is
watching! <g> A lot of the mixture usually foams out of my sinuses, down my
forehead and onto the shower floor. I keep my eyes closed so that it doesn't
drain into my eyes.

Even at 3ml peroxide to 50ml water, it burns somewhat. Most of the time it
just burns a little, sometimes quite a bit (depending upon how sensitive my
sinuses are at the time), but nothing severe, and there is no additional
discomfort after the treatment is over. The first treatment, or two,
produces a lot of foam. Sometimes there is a mix of foam with blood.
Sometimes there is very little foam and a lot of bloodish water. It is not
the most pleasant experience, but it isn't too bad, and it works for me.
When I first started using this type of irrigation, I gave myself several
treatments within an hour, to treat a suspected infection. Now, I might use
one or two treatments, and then do the same thing for a day or two. The
number of treatments I use is based on the amount of garbage that needs to
be flushed from my sinuses and how my sinuses feel. If the discharge is
relatively clean, and my sinuses are not too bad, I limit the number of
irrigations. I?ll wait a few days after the treatments. If my sinuses do not
improve I plan to re-treat them, but I have not had to retreat in the past
two years. Just a couple of irrigations for one or two days seems to improve
the functioning of my sinuses and takes away that ?getting a cold? feeling.

Every time I get stuffiness that lasts for a couple of days, and if it seems
to be getting worse, I use the treatment, and I've used it many times over
the past two years. The result-------- I have not had to use antibiotics in
the past two years, and I have not had an untreatable infection. Every time
I feel like my sinuses might be infecting, I treat myself. The treatment
takes less than ten minutes. Not bad to ward off infections! Every time my
sinuses start to ache, I treat them. Junk comes out, and the ache goes away.

After a series of treatments, it still takes a few days for the sinuses to
get better, but when they do, I feel great, with wide open and calm sinuses.
What a great relief to not have to use antibiotics several times a year!

Before each irrigation, I place a towel and a tissue nearby. After the
treatment I lift my head, while it's in the shower, and let my sinuses drain
into the shower. It can look pretty bloody, foamy and nasty. I then clean my
forehead of the foam that seeped out of my sinuses during the treatment.
(This is not something I do in front of a girlfriend that I am trying to
impress.) I don't blow my nose for a few minutes in order to give the
mixture a little longer to do its job. After that, I blow my nose.

The first few times I did this treatment, the discharge was real nasty, but
not any longer. I am guessing that a lot of junk gets stuck up into the
sinuses for a long time and that the "soaking, upside down" irrigation helps
to loosen most of the junk. Just recently my sinuses were aching. I did an
irrigation, and some weird junk came out and the aching went away. I used to
suffer with achy sinuses for days. Now the aching stops after only one
irrigation. The irrigation really works for me!

It is my understanding that some infections can stay dormant in the sinuses
for years, and only become ?active? infections when certain events activate
them. To me, that is why my infections kept returning several times a year.
I don?t think that the antibiotics ever really get rid of the problem, but I
don?t know for sure. I don?t know if I get sinus infections anymore. But, I
don?t worry about them. If I get stuffy for several days, I just irrigate
and forget about it. I feel much better!

I wanted to share my experiences with other sufferers. Does anyone do a
similar type of irrigation, or has anyone found a more effective and less
messy method? This seems safe and effective for me, but I have no idea if
this type of sinus treatment would help others, or make their conditions
worse. Not being a doctor, I don?t recommend this for anyone unless they
check with their doctor first.

Thank you for sharing. This sounds good and I plan to try it.

I have used the hydrogen peroxide on a Q-tip for treating infections
and encrustations in my nasal passages and it works.

Good luck! Let me know how you do.

I took myself off my beclomethasone nasal meds on Oct 6th.  I was OK at
first but by the 8th, I was badly stuffed up and had significant sinus
pressure, and felt like I had a bad cold. It was difficult to sleep. I gave
myself one peroxide irrigation on the 8th and one on the 12th, to ward
against infection.  I started getting better yesterday, and today is the
first day that my sinuses are almost wide open and I am really feeling much
better, all without sinus medicine.

It is such a great relief to me, to not have sinus infections hanging over
my head all the time. I'd get badly stuffed up and constantly wonder if I
had an infection, or just an allergic reaction, or if it would lead to an
infection. Not any more! I wish the Internet had been around 20 years ago
for research, I would have cured my sinus problems a long time ago.

I started out with the peroxide on a Q-Tip too, but I couldn't get it back
into the sinuses far enough, especially when my sinuses were swelled.

How are you doing right now? Do you have sinus pressure? Is the discharge
yellow, or greenish-yellow? Do you have chills and feel like you have a
cold? Do your sinuses ache?

I don't have a morbid curiosity. It's just the way I feel when my sinuses
get out of control. I have almost no sinus pressure right now, and the
discharge is completely clear.

It will be interesting to hear about your symptoms before, and after.

Good luck!

Wild Bill,
When you say that you use hydrogen peroxide to treat encrustation,
what exactly is an encrustation.  My nasal passage gets very dry and crusty
due to too many surgeries.  I am wondering if hydrogen peroxide will help
me?  Can hydrogen peroxide be dangerous to use in places like the nose?

Thanks,
Robert

I frequently use diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide to irrigate my sinuses. I
don't know if it could be dangerous to others, if it can help others, or if
it would make others worse.

I will repost my experiences with successfully treating my sinus problems. I
am currently not using any sinus meds or treatment, except for irrigation.

MODIFIED REPOST FROM 10/14/03 6:15pm:

How I fixed my sinus problems.

No more chronic sinus infections!!!  After decades of swollen, stuffed-up
sinuses, thick yellow gunk, and miserable infections, I finally have the
condition under control. I feel great! I don't even take sinus meds any
more.

I have found a simple, inexpensive method of irrigation that effectively
treats my sinuses and either prevents or heals my sinus infections.

My sinuses first get stuffy, and then I feel like I am getting a cold. Over
the next few days my sinuses start closing up, and getting more congested. I
get a thick yellow discharge. This condition has either led to an infection,
or continued to give me misery for long periods of time, so I start a series
of 'upside down' irrigations.

I buy a plastic saline nasal spray, for about $2.50, at Wal-Mart and empty
it. I then fill the empty saline nasal sprayer with a pinch of baking soda,
a pinch of salt, 3ml to 5ml of 'common store bought' 3% hydrogen peroxide
and 50ml water. I never exceed 5ml of 3% peroxide to 50ml of filtered
water, or a one to ten dilution of 3% peroxide to water AT MOST!

Mixture: 3ml to 5ml of 3% hydrogen peroxide
         Pinch of baking soda.
         Pinch of salt.
         50ml of filtered water.

Hydrogen peroxide can be very irritating to the sinuses, so I am very
careful with the mixture. When I first started experimenting with the sinus
irrigation, I used more than 15ml of 3% peroxide, to 50ml of water, and it
really burned my sinuses and made my sinuses close up much worse on both
sides, and the discomfort lasted for several days. So I never use more than
one part of peroxide to 10 parts of water.

To do the sinus irrigation, I kneel, and place the top of my head down onto
the floor of my shower and spray the contents firmly into my sinuses, which
are tilted upwards. It is really not as bad as it sounds. In fact, it beats
the HELL out of having closed sinuses and getting constant infections and
constantly taking antibiotics.

I place my head down on the shower floor so that my sinuses are facing
upwards, and so that I don't swallow any of the mixture and so that the
mixture soaks deep into my sinuses. The more clogged my sinuses, the longer
I keep my head down on the shower floor, letting the mixture seep deep into
my sinuses. I shake the mixture occasionally and make sure that I spray most
of it into my "upside down" sinuses. I spray it into both nostrils, and
after they fill up, when I spray into one nostril it comes out the other. I
keep my head upside down on the shower floor for a few minutes after the
irrigation in order for the mixture to get deep into my sinuses. I even
shake my head and contort my face in order to help work the mixture into the
sinuses. I don't know how much that helps, and it probably makes me look
like an idiot, but who cares-----, nobody is watching! <g> A lot of the
mixture usually foams out of my sinuses, down my forehead and onto the
shower floor. I keep my eyes closed so that it doesn't drain into my eyes. I
don't breath in through my nose during the irrigation, mostly to avoid
sucking some of the mixture into the Eustachian tubes of my ears.

Even at 3ml peroxide to 50ml water, it burns somewhat. Most of the time it
just burns a little. But sometimes it burns quite a bit (depending upon how
sensitive my sinuses are at the time). I just grit my teeth and tolerate the
stinging of my sinuses, and after a while the stinging or burning starts
getting better. I found that there is no additional discomfort after the
irrigation is over, unless I use too much peroxide.

The irrigations usually produces a lot of foam, especially if I use 5ml of
Peroxide. Sometimes there is a mix of blood with the foam. Subsequent
irrigations might produce very little foam and a lot of bloodish water. I
guess it all depends upon the condition of my sinus at the time of the
irrigation.

The Irrigation is not the most pleasant experience, but it isn't too bad,
and it works for me. When I first started using this type of irrigation, I
gave myself several irrigations within a day, to treat a suspected
infection, or to treat very irritated, swollen, or closed sinuses. Then I
would repeat the irrigations over the next few days until my sinuses seemed
to be responding. Then I would skip a day or two and see if my sinuses
continued to do better. The number of irrigations I use is also based on the
amount of garbage that needs to be flushed from my sinuses and how my
sinuses feel. If the discharge is relatively clean, and my sinuses are not
too bad, I limit the number of irrigations. Relatively clean, to me, means
that some of the discharge is clear and some might be yellow, but it is not
too thick. If my sinuses aren't too bad, just a couple of irrigations for
one or two days seems to improve the functioning of my sinuses and takes
away that 'getting a cold' feeling.

Every time I get stuffiness that lasts for a couple of days, and if it seems
to be getting worse, I irrigate, and I've irrigated many times over the past
two years. The result-------- I have not had to use antibiotics in the past
two years, and I have not had an untreatable infection. Every time I feel
like my sinuses might be infecting, I treat myself. The irrigation takes 10
to 15 minutes depending upon how long I want the mixture to seep into my
sinuses. Not bad to ward off infections! Every time my sinuses start to
ache, I treat them. Junk comes out, and the ache goes away.

After a series of irrigations, it still can take a few days for the sinuses
to get better, but when they do, I feel great, with wide open and calm

use the tissue(s) to clean my forehead of the foam that seeped out of my
sinuses during the irrigation. (This is not something I do in front of a
girlfriend that I am trying to impress.) I don't blow my nose for a few
minutes in order to give the mixture a little longer to do its job. After

I use a Neti for daily saline irrigation but I'm interested in trying your
method durring bad episodes.

Do you think using a spray like "Afrin" to open the sinuses befor the
irrigation might be benificial in reaching deeper into the sinuses?

Best regards,

Using a decongestant to open up the sinuses, before an "upside down"
irrigation, sounds like a good idea. I am not a doctor, nor an expert, so I
don't know how well the peroxide and baking soda mixture would interact with
a spray decongestant.  I've never tried it. I added salt to the peroxide and
baking soda mixture, because the salt is supposed to help open up the
sinuses.

I keep my head down on the shower floor for a longer time, if my sinuses are
swollen shut, in order to allow the mixture to seep into them.

It was so much of a relief not having sinus infections anymore, after years
and years of sinus infections, that I did not look for easier ways or
improvements in the method.

It does make a lot of sense to use a decongestant in combination with the
irrigation.
If I try a decongestant first, I think I would try an oral one. But, OTOH,
if your sinuses are like mine, during a bad sinus attack, almost nothing
opens them up. Please post back about what you do, and how well it works for
you.

Thanks.....

I just ordered a Grossan Hydro Pulse. I've been reading about this device
for some time.

I normally use a Jala Neti with saline solution but it works by gravity and
doesn't pulse like the machine.

The last 2 days have had my right sinus closed up tightly and the water from
the neti would not pass through.

If you're not familiar, a Jala Neti looks like a small teapot and had a
fitting for the nostril. Water is poured into one side and exits through the
other. Water can also be drawn through the nose and into the back of the
throat and will really loosen some stuff up. Its very soothing too with the
right amount of salt and the right temperature.

I'll try this machine and if needed I'll advance to your technique. Perhaps
your solution in this device would work?

[snip]

Has your method affected your sense of smell?
Did you discuss with an ENT?  If so,  what was his reaction?
Can do - 16 Oct 2003 14:10 GMT
My sense of smell is still poor. I have not discussed my type of irrigation
with any doctor. I used to go to one of the best ENTs in this area, but,
after waiting for long periods of time in his crowded waiting room, all he
could do is put me on antibiotics, and then call for the next member of his
patient 'herd' in his waiting room.

I've stopped my Beconase sinus meds completely, and am going to try and stay
with flooding my sinuses with peroxide/baking soda/salt. I am hoping that my
sense of smell will return without the meds, but I don't know for sure. It
is really a wonderful feeling to not fear another sinus infection. I am a
little stuffy this a.m. but it is clearing up nicely, so I will not do
another irrigation at this time.
Trapper Vic - 16 Oct 2003 20:20 GMT
This sounds like it's worth trying.   People take Hydrogen Peroxide
via I.V., so it can't be dangerous to try in a nasal irrigation.  At
least safer than some of the other stuff people on this newsgroup have
irrigated with (Betadine, etc.)

Do you just keep spraying and spraying until you fill up your sinuses?
Seems like a "lavage" bottle would be easier to use.
Can do - 16 Oct 2003 21:04 GMT
I am not familiar with a lavage bottle. When I use the small plastic saline
nasal sprayer, it takes about 5-6 sprays to fill up my sinuses. At that
time, when I spray, the liquid comes out the other sinus, or backs up out of
the sinus that I am spraying into, and flows down my forehead. I want the
mixture of peroxide, baking soda and salt to soak deep into my sinuses, so I
take my time. I'll spray and then wait a few moments and then spray again,
until the bottle is almost empty.

I then remain there for a couple of minutes, especially if my sinuses are
swollen shut, to allow for the mixture to seep into those sinuses. I turn my
head to the side, also. I don't really know if this treatment gets into ALL
of my sinuses, but I feel that, if I flood my sinuses, it has a chance to
treat ALL sinuses.

After I send this response, I am going to look up  "lavage" bottle on the
Internet.  The small saline nasal spray bottle is difficult to get the top
off, and makes all kinds of noise when using it, since it is not really air
tight. I hope that the "lavage" bottle is a better way to irrigate. Thanks
for the tip.

Kroger Grocery Stores sell their brand of nasal decongestant in a
nasal spray pump that is refillable. It has a screw off top. Works
great. Cost $3.99 and right now buy one get one free with a Kroger
card. Great buy. I just bought four.

I have just started using the mixture described above. I will post how

Great idea about buying a nasal spray pump. I'll check out my neighborhood
drug stores.

I'd be interested in how much, if any, it burns you, how much foam was
produced, how much blood, how long you keep your head down and let the
mixture soak into your sinuses, how swelled your sinuses were before the
treatment.

I looked back at the log of one of my first treatments, when I was
experimenting, right after I just got off ten days of Amoxicillin. My log
said:

"9:10pm Sinus pressure, right side, DAMN!"

"Right sinus closed. 1 to 10 peroxide/baking soda treatment tonight"

"2 irrigations. 1st one very bloody. 10 to 1 peroxide"

"added a 3rd irrigation no foam, no blood"

"next day, 12:40pm, feel better. did a 4th irrigation. Added double pinch
of baking soda"

"Damn. Right sinus closed ALL NIGHT!"

" next morning - 9am. feel better."

" 1pm Did another 1 to 10, peroxide/baking soda irrigation. Lots of foam.
Sinuses more open after treatment"

" 4:53pm feel good all day. did 2nd peroxide/baking soda irrigation. Foamed
quite a bit. Did not blow nose for 8 minutes after irrigation. Seemed to
help clean out gunk. Sinuses feel more open"

"next day, 7:53am. morning. Right sinus closed."

"10:44am.  did another peroxide/baking soda irrigation."

"2:07pm. 2nd peroxide/baking soda irrigation, lots of foam, did 3rd
peroxide/baking soda irrigation. Added pinch of salt. 1 to 20 peroxide to
water. Lots of foam"

"next day, 6am. Sinus better in morning. more open"

"7:31am Sinus VERY GOOD!!! Did another peroxide with two pinches of baking
soda and added one pinch of salt. Peroxide 1 to 20 to water. Foamed but not
as much."

"3pm. Sinuses open today. 1st day open!"

"nighttime-- sinus a bit stuffy again"

"Next day. 7:52am. Sinus stuffy. No treatments today"

"Next day. Sinus OK."

"1pm another peroxide/one pinch baking soda/one pinch salt, 1 to 20
peroxide to water, irrigation"

"6:05pm - Sinuses feel GREAT!!!"

"next day--- sinus little stuffy. No irrigations."

"next day---- no irrigations"

"next day--- sinus feels great. peroxide/one pinch baking soda/one pinch
salt. 1 to 20 peroxide to water. Foamed again. Sinus discharge really clean"

"Next day--- sinuses good."

"next day--- no irrigations"

"next day--- peroxide 20 to 1/one pinch baking soda/one pinch salt -
discharge is red. slight foam."

"next 7 days--- no irrigations"

" next day--- peroxide 20 to 1/one pinch baking soda/one pinch salt
irrigation"

" next 6 days--- no irrigations"

"next day --- 2 peroxide(15 to 1 to water)/baking soda/salt irrigations."

"next 87 days --- no irrigations."

"next day, sinus stuffy for 3rd day. Slight Asthma. One peroxide/baking
soda/salt irrigation"

Hope this log of my experiences with irrigation helps. (or puts someone to
sleep!) <g>

I just realized that the log had mistakes at the end. The mix of peroxide to
water  that I use is never more that 1 part peroxide to 10 parts water. I
was sloppy on the log. When it says peroxide 20 to 1 water, it means one
part peroxide to 20 parts water. Never more than one part peroxide to 10
parts water. I had it wrong at the end of the log.

You were going to try irrigation "upside down" with peroxide/baking
soda/salt, around Oct 17th. If you did, that would have been a week ago.

If the irrigation worked, like it did for me the very first time I tried it
to treat a persistent infection, you could be noticing an improvement by
now.

I hope that it was effective for you, and that you are feeling much better.

How are you doing?

Anyone else try it, after checking with their doctor?

I've fixed this up to make it read better. This represents my log depicting
my actual experiences, when I was trying to find a cure for my sinus
infections with 3% hydrogen peroxide.

This log was taken right after I just got off ten days of Amoxicillin for a
sinus infection. I thought that my sinus infection was fixed. My sinus
infections start with pressure in one or both sinuses, which doesn't go away
and then continues to get worse. I've had surgery in my right sinus, which
has left scarring, so my right sinus gives me most of my problems with
infections.

My log said:
"Day 1: 9:10pm Sinus pressure, right side, DAMN! Right sinus closed. 1 to 10
peroxide/baking soda treatment tonight. 2 irrigations. 1st one very bloody.
10 parts water to 1 part peroxide. Added a 3rd irrigation no foam, no blood"

"Day 2: 12:40pm, feel better. did a 4th irrigation. Added double pinch of
baking soda."

"Day 2: nighttime: Damn. Right sinus closed ALL NIGHT!"

"Day 3: 9am. feel better. 1pm Did another 1 part  peroxide to 10 parts
water/baking soda irrigation. Lots of foam. Sinuses more open after
treatment. 4:53pm feel good all day. Did 2nd peroxide/baking soda
irrigation. Foamed quite a bit. Did not blow nose for 8 minutes after
irrigation. Seemed to help clean out gunk. Sinuses feel more open"

"Day 4: 7:53am. morning. Right sinus closed. 10:44am. did another
peroxide/baking soda irrigation. 2:07pm. 2nd peroxide/baking soda
irrigation, lots of foam, did 3rd peroxide/baking soda irrigation. Added
pinch of salt. 1 part peroxide to 20 parts water. Lots of foam"

"Day 5: 6am. Sinus better in morning. more open. 7:31am Sinus VERY GOOD!!!
Did another peroxide with two pinches of baking soda and added one pinch of
salt. 1 part Peroxide to 20 parts water. Foamed but not as much. 3pm.
Sinuses open today. 1st day open! nighttime-- sinus a bit stuffy again"

"Day 6: 7:52am. Sinus stuffy. No treatments today"

"Day 7: Sinus OK. 1pm another peroxide/one pinch baking soda/one pinch salt,
1 part peroxide to 20 parts water, irrigation. 6:05pm - Sinuses feel
GREAT!!!"

"Day 8: sinus little stuffy. No irrigations today."

"Day 9: no irrigations today"

"Day 10: sinus feels great. Did an irrigation, peroxide/one pinch baking
soda/one pinch salt. 1 part peroxide to 20 parts water. Foamed again. Sinus
discharge really clean"

"Day 11: sinuses good."

"Day 12: no irrigations"

"Day 13: 1 part peroxide to 20 parts water/one pinch baking soda/one pinch
salt - discharge is red. slight foam."

"Day 14-20 no irrigations"

"Day 21: 1 part peroxide to 20 parts water/one pinch baking soda/one pinch
salt irrigation"

"Day 22-27 no irrigations"

"Day 28 Two peroxide irrigations, (1 part peroxide to 15 parts water)/baking
soda/salt irrigations."

"next 87 days --- no irrigations."

"next day, sinus stuffy for 3rd day in a row. Slight Asthma. One
peroxide/baking soda/salt irrigation."

Hope this log of my experiences with irrigation helps. (or puts someone to
sleep!) <g>

Sinus stuffed up for a few days last week. I wanted to ward off any
possibility of infection, and also clean out my sinuses, so a few days ago,
I did an "upside down" peroxide irrigation with 5ml peroxide to 50ml
filtered water, a pinch of baking soda and a pinch of salt. Once again, I
did not breath in through my nose, in order to avoid sucking the mixture
into my Eustachian Tubes.

This time it opened me up right after the irrigation. My sinuses feel pretty
damn good and I don't intend to irrigate again until needed.

Hi, I tryed the peroxide with breathease XL.. I use 10:1 ratio.(no more
than that) of distilled water/peroxide. 15 ozs total. One scoop of
breathease and it seems to work good. Is this similiar to your method?
Seems your salt/baking soda is about the same. I tryed many saline's and
this one is just much more milder. Let me know what you think? I dont do
the upside down method like you, I just do the over the sink method. But
I might try your way. Let me know if the shower method seems to be
better. I do not reccommend this to anybody unless you see and ask your
Doctor. I can tell you I had a sinus infection, seen my Doctor and he
said no antibiotics. I hate taking them. I really do feel better. I did
use rhinocord aqua for a few days to get the nose open. So far so good.
2 days no med at all. Good luck
Can do - 10 Nov 2003 17:23 GMT
If the mixture was able to get into where the sinus infection was located, I
would imagine that it would work. The reason I do it with my head down on
the shower floor, is so that I have a better chance of the peroxide seeping
into the infected area(s) of my sinus.

I don't know what breathease is.

When you irrigated, did you get a lot of foam or bloodish water?

To me, the more foam, the more possibility of the peroxide coming into
contact with bacteria.

Thanks for the feedback. I hope that it really works for you. I no longer
have to take antibiotics for sinus infections.

In fact, my sense of smell is coming back big time. I haven't had a good
sense of smell in years. I am hoping that it is not just a short term
anomaly.

If you get a chance, post back and let us know how you are doing!

Best of luck, and thanks for your response.

Hi, I did not have blood or foam. But before adding peroxide I had
yellow discharge. Now the last two days its clear. I will try your way
and let you know. If it works we will patent it. LOL... I tryed sino
fresh and its irratating and I did not see any relief. At 16.00 a tiny
bottle they better get it right. But like all sinus sufferers I try
anything OTC as long as its not nose spray thats addictive. The
breathease XL I think is a Grossans product. I normally do not mention
products because people think its spam. LOL But it is a great
inexpensive saline powder that you mix in water. I use a waterpik and a
irragator end. The peroxide does burn a little but its not bad. I use 15
ozs.when I irragate. I will let you know how the 50ml shower Idea works.
The problem is my sinuses are great right now so I better wait till they
clog a little. Good luck

This is an updated version of the information:

How I fixed my sinus problems.

No more chronic sinus infections!!!  After decades of swollen, stuffed-up
sinuses, thick yellow gunk, and miserable infections, I finally have the
condition under control. I feel great!

I buy a plastic saline nasal spray, for about $2.50, and empty it. I then
fill the empty saline nasal sprayer with a pinch of baking soda, a pinch of
salt, 3ml to 5ml of 'common store bought' 3% hydrogen peroxide and 50ml
water. I never exceed 5ml of 3% peroxide to 50ml of filtered  water, or a
one to ten dilution of 3% peroxide to water AT MOST!

Even at 3ml peroxide to 50ml water, it burns, or stings, somewhat. Most of
the time it just burns a little. But sometimes it burns quite a bit
(depending upon how sensitive my sinuses are at the time). I just grit my
teeth and tolerate the stinging of my sinuses, and after a while the
stinging or burning starts getting better. I found that there is no
additional discomfort after the irrigation is over, unless I use too much
peroxide.

After a series of irrigations, it still can take a few days for the sinuses
to get better, but when they do, I feel great, with wide open and calm
sinuses. What a great relief to not have to use antibiotics several times a
year!

Before each irrigation, I place a towel and a tissue nearby. After the
irrigation I lift my head, while it's in the shower, and let my sinuses
drain into the shower. It can look pretty bloody, foamy and nasty. I then
stand up and use the tissue(s) to clean my forehead of the foam that seeped
out of my sinuses during the irrigation. (This is not something I do in
front of a girlfriend that I am trying to impress.) I don't blow my nose for
a few minutes in order to give the mixture a little longer to do its job.
After that, I blow my nose.

The first few times I did this irrigation, the discharge was real nasty, but
not any longer.

It is my understanding that some infections can stay dormant in the sinuses
for years, and only become 'active' infections when certain events activate
them. To me, that is why my infections kept returning several times a year.
I don't think that the antibiotics ever really got rid of my infections,
but I don't know for sure. I don't know if I get sinus infections anymore.
But, I don't worry about them. If I get stuffy for several days, I just
irrigate and forget about it. I feel much better!

I wanted to share my experiences with other sufferers. Does anyone do a
similar type of irrigation, or has anyone found a more effective and less
messy method? This seems safe and effective for me, but I have no idea if
this type of sinus irrigation would help others, or make their conditions
worse. Not being a doctor, I don't recommend this for anyone unless they
check with their doctor first.

Can Do,
Thanks for your post.  I am going to try it.  I've got a question for
you though.  Before using this method did you try the normal method of
irragation with a water pic or similar device using the same
ingredients?  Just curious if that had had any affect on your symptoms
since I have been irrigating for  years but still constantly fight the
ongoing battle.

Thanks in advance,
Scott

I never tried to irrigate using any other method. My intent was to get the
peroxide/baking soda/salt to seep deep into my sinuses. I wasn't sure that
regular irrigation would do that, especially if both my sinuses were closed
shut. Not that I have anything against irrigation with a water pic or
similar device. I have read the posts of many sinus sufferers who
enthusiastically praise the merits of the normal irrigation method.

I was in so much misery for so many years that when I found a solution that
worked, I stopped there, and then after a couple of years, I decided to
start posting about it on the Internet. I evaluated the "upside down"
irrigation for a while before I tried it. For me, the only danger was the
possibility of sucking the mixture into my Eustachian Tubes. So, I made sure
that I didn't breath in through my sinuses, while the mixture was in them.
I've done the irrigation many, many times without a problem. I've sometimes
gone several months without having to irrigate. I guess it depends upon how
much garbage gets stuck into the sinuses over time. If you decide to try it,
please let me know the results.

Best of health!

Regards.......

Hello....After irrigating, I tried sticking my head over the edge of the
bed (while lying face down on it), and placing the very top of my head
on the floor. ...I'd stay in this position a while, so my upper sinuses
could marinate in the irrigation liquid.  ...I have to tell you, though,
I think it made them worse. Perhaps by remaining in this position, I was
actually encouraging more of the bad stuff to drain back into the
sinuses.  I've had better luck irrigating in the upright position, then
lying horizontal (only), to facilitate drainage.    ...Jon
Can do - 13 Nov 2003 14:02 GMT
Thanks for the feedback. Sorry it didn't seem to work for you.

When you say that you were face down on the bed, and then you put your head
on the floor..... Does that mean that your shoulders were over the side of
the bed? They would need to be in order to be able to reach the floor with
your head. Just curious. I've never tried it that way. Sounds very
uncomfortable. But, I can understand that. Sinus sufferers will do ANYTHING
to get rid of their misery.

Some questions.

Did you spray the peroxide into your nose while your head was "upside down"
on the floor?

Did you get a lot of foam, or bloodish water? Were you able to flood your
sinuses, as much as possible.

It is not unusual for the sinuses to be irritated after a peroxide
irrigation. Peroxide is very harsh on the sinuses. That is why I don't use
more that one part peroxide to ten parts water. Sometimes it takes about
three days after an irrigation for the sinuses to start getting better. I am
hoping that is your case.

I went for decades with miserable, multi-year infections. I went to doctors
and had CT Scans, x-rays, surgery, antibiotics etc. It was horrible! When I
found out that flooding my sinuses "upside down" with peroxide/baking
soda/salt fixed my sinus problems, I was overjoyed. After using it many
times for about two years, I wanted to share my good news with others. That
is why I started posted about it on the Internet. But, I don't know who will
benefit from it or who will not. Now, sometimes, I go three months without
having to irrigate.

Did you only try one irrigation? What was your mixture? How much peroxide
did you use and how much water?

I don't know if one irrigation would be enough. If the mixture got into the
correct area of  your sinuses, and was able to effectively get at the
dormant, or active, source of your sinus misery, about three-four days from
now you will be doing cartwheels. Let's hope so.

Best of luck and health to you!

Hi "can do" ...Sorry to have misled you, but I've never tried the
Peroxide irrigation.  ...I've made matters worse by simply using the
"head on the floor" position as stated  (my shoulders are over the edge
of the bed, as you stated), with the ordinary salt irrigation. ...My
sinus problems are of a deeper nature; hence my nasal breathing isn't
currently affected --that much. ...I guess if you're completely plugged
up, you can't make the condition any worse regardless of your irrigation
procedure. ....I've always maintained the opinion, however, that the
body wants to rid itself of the bad; thus, the worst thing you can do is
blow your nose, and force the germs etc. back in. ...Further, I feel by
filling up your nasal cavity with a liquid and forcing it back into the
sinuses (Albeit by gravity), defeats the cleaning "bernoulli" principles
accomplished by Dr. Grossan's tip. ....But if you find your procedure
helps your condition --- what the heck...Go for it.   ...Jon

From what I understand, the only reason for using salt to irrigate the
sinuses, is because salt tends to reduce swelling in the sinuses. That is
why I add salt to my Peroxide/Baking Soda, "Upside Down" irrigation. If the
salt reduces swelling then my anti-infective mixture can better do it's job.

Thanks for the feedback! I wish you the best of luck, and health!

> From what I understand, the only reason for using salt to irrigate the

The salt is used in the irrigation fluid to make it match the salinity
of body fluids.

We all know how fast & easy salt dissolves in water.  When two fluids
mix with different salinities, the salt travels to the less salty liquid
quickly (compared to many other things that dissolve in water).

Cells exposed to a fluid (irrigation water) that has less salt react to
the change in salinity: they swell up.

I don't think the salt will reduce swelling present prior to irrigation.
My theoretical knowledge and personal experience show that adding salt
prevents swelling during & after irrigation.

If you want to prove this (I wouldn't...) try irrigating without salt
one time and with salt the next & compare how your schnoz feels.

samuel is correct. You try to make the solution as close to the natural body as
possible - called isotonic. Using hypotonic or plain water to irrigate is quite
painful.
