I think your doctor is probably right that it is allergies.

It is normal for the turbinates in the nose to expand alternately about every 6
hours, first on one side, then on the other.

If they are already inflamed and enlarged, from allergies, then they will block
your breathing on each side alternately on that cycle.

That might be affecting your ears too, by blocking air flow in that area.

I would try a steroid nasal spray, such as Nasnoex or Flonase.

These need to be taken long-term to be effective.....

Marvin: many of the patients I see who have this complaint - ears stopping
up frequently have this problem because of heavy forcing. Its like rubbing
your eyes too hard, they will swell and the harder you rub the more they
will swell.
Number one therapy is to clear the sinus problem.

What do you mean by heavy forcing, holding my nose,  what do you use
to clear the sinus problem, is it a good idea to hold your nose and
pop your ears or just leave them alone, it seems to be the only thing
that brings releave.
i have been takeing garlic, salmon oil, stabelite,
one other thing that i did not mention is that we had black mold back
in nov don't know if that has any thing to do with it.
but my wife and i both are just plain tired and feel like we have a
bug of somekind, but there are so many here who are suffering with the
same kind of problem,  we have had blood work, cat scan mri's, nothing
show's up, although one doctor told me that we have a lot of mold ,
fungus and bacteria in this area,  we have been trying every thing we
can think of but no results yet, but everyone seems to be tired also,
maybe it just wear's you down i don't know, some people have moved out
of the area .
we live right on the colorado river, the indians spray a lot , and we
have had a lot of rain this winter, and the hills are full of flower's
right now, never had that here before, we live in the mohave desert.
i would say that 3 out of 5 people here have this problem,
any idea's would be a help at this time we are willing to try any
thing.
thanks
marvin

Ask your doctor if using pulsatile irrigation to clear the sinus and restore
normal cilia function would be of help. Also ask if using Clear.ease -
proteolytic enzyme of pineapple and papaya would be of benefit to shrink
swelling at the eustachian opening and thin the mucus.
