Hi.  I really don't know what to do.  I got sick again with a sinus/ear
infection yesturday.  3 days after getting xolair.  I know maybe I'm
crazy, but what if its making me sick.  All the doctors say its fine
and I'm just sick again.  Right.  I was sick about 6 weeks ago and it
lasted 4 months with heavy antibiotics and pregnizone.  Ironically I
finished the antibiotics the day before I got sick.  I don't understand
whats going on.  I can't hear out of my ears and I have tubes! Its been
a year since my 7th sinus surgery and nothing is getting any better.
I'm so sick of this.  No one is helping me.  They are all too slow.
What if the xolair is making me sick or worse what if its not going to
work on me?  My ENT doctor is all ready to cut me open again to remove
a huge cyst blocking my entire right maxillary sinus. We decided to
wait to see if the xolair would work but I dont know if I can wait for
anything. Maybe I've become resistant to everything.  I mean my body
has gone through some weird chemical changes in the last few years. I
cant get a flu shot anymore because in the last 2 years I went into
anaphaletic chock.  Never did that before.  Can't get allergy shots
because they give me untolerable reactions.  I'm not being impatient.
I'm just sick of suffering and I'm sick of being down every time
something doesn't work.  I have missed so much school. I really don't
know what to say or do right now. I'm afraid the doctors are just going
to give up and let me go deaf and then stick tubes into my head to
drain my sinuses.  Any advise?

Julie, try taking some vitamins, especially vitamin C and 1 a day
multi-mineral.

It seems like your body needs something to fight these germs and
virus's.

When I was in my 30's my MD put me on 1-a-day vitamins as I caught
anything that was in the air and my immune system could not fight so
many ailments.
I was in his office in the summer and winter just about every week as I
was sick with something.

Thanks but I've been doing that. Mom has gotten me in the habit of
taking a multiple, calcium, C, E every day since I was a tot.  I now
even take other things that doctors perscribe as herbal stuff like
cranberry extract, omega 3, and so forth.  I'm doing all I can as far
as I know.

Have you already seen a board-certified immunologist for a full
immunological workup?

Congenital immunological deficiencies occur in about 1 in 700 people.

If you have severe allergies, maybe it's time for you to consider
relocation to a different area.

Yes there are a number of possible underlying causes and it would be sad if
there were one and it took a long time to identify it.

In view of the severity and scope of his problems, this particular patient
might consider going to Mayo Clinic in Rochester Minnesota, which is one of the
very few places that is totally interdisciplinary and ensures that all possible
underlying causaes are investigated.    This would just be to get the right
diagnosis.  Once he has an accurate diagnosis, it can be treated clsoer to
home.

Mayo has relationships with all U.S. insurance companies, even HMO's, so his
insurance would likely agree to cover all costs (except travel and lodging,
which can be relatively inexpensive), especially if he can get oen of current
doctors to recommend it.   He can try to insist that they do so.  Pressure like
that often works.

I agree that apart from all else, he needs to try to et a handle on what how to
avoid allergens and irritants.  He can try a vacation elsewhere or try living
elsewhere and try to learn from that what improves his condition.

Also try increasing outside air exchange in his house.   This is a very good
way to reduce indoor dust and mold, which are the most likely
allerrgens/irritants (even if allergy tests are inconclusive).
