Hi folks,
I know this is a bit off topic, but it's sorta appropriate - I guess?
I am male, 20 years of age, and have been having problems with tonsil
crypts. I have about 4 small ones on my left tonsil, which cause no
problems at all, and 2 large ones on my right, which constantly emit
an odour not unlike a sewer! After giving up on 'picking at them', I
am currently trying throat irrigation with a DIY device, and I'm on
antihistamines to try and reduce nasal drip from my many allergies.
My question is, what will happen to them in the long term. Will they
heal up, shrink, or will they continue to grow until I have no tonsils
at all? My doctor's not much interested. My best friend reckons he
can't smell them, but it's hard to believe! I think he's just trying
to protect my feelings? Is there anybody else who can smell their
tonsils, when no-one else can?
Any help would be much appreciated,
Chris

Hello! I have the same problem! It is really gross. I don't know how to
get rid of them. I know i have bad breath. How do you cleanse your
tonsils? I just use a q-tip to pop them out and gargle with listerine and
then hope for the best.

I also have the little pockets of puss that form in my tonsils. YUCK!! I
use q-tips to remove them and try to rinse my mouth with salt water. I try
to avoid eating carrots since I seem to get infections when I eat them.
They get stuck in the holes very easily. I heard that you can get your
tonsils removed if they cause you that much discomfort. I've thought about
it myself, but I need vacation time in order to do that. Let me know if you
ever figure out how to get rid of them.

From personal experience, I can tell you that tonsil removal is serious
surgery for an adult, not to be undertaken lightly. A not-fun experience!

This tonsil crypts - is generally NOT a serious condition of health and as
far as health is concerned can be ignored. Aspirin chewing gum is often
helpful.
My company www.hydromedonline.com makes a device, the Hydro Pulse that comes
with throat irrigator tips designed just for this problem. The pulsation
removes the material from the crypts and may clear the condition.

I'm 23 and I've had them for 4 years now, and this is pretty much what I
know of how to get rid of them and/or keep them from forming:
-make sure you brush not only your teeth and gums twice a day (or more), but
also under and on top/back of your tongue... that's where the majority of the
sulfur-producing bacteria lives and breeds. This sulfur-producing anaerobic
(meaning they don't need oxygen to live and produce, they do just fine w/out.)
bacteria is a huge part of the "tonsil stones" and what causes the nasty
smell.
You can also use a an oxygenating toothpaste and mouthwash, which
neutralize the anaerobic bacteria (try the TheraBreath brand)
-gargle listerine or deluted salt in warm water after meals and before bed
-don't snort drugs or anything really. Everything that goes into your nose
drips out a little bit into your mouth (it's called post-nasal drip). My
tonsil stones decreased a great deal after I ended my college-drug phase and
stopped putting cocaine up my nose.
-you don't need to do this and doing it too much can make your tonsils
irritated and sometimes bleed, but whenever i 'taste' the presence of a
tonsil stone in my mouth, I squeeze/pop it out and then gargle right away
while the crypt or opening is still kind of big. You can use a Q-tip or clean
finger for this.
There's really not much more you can do. If your bad breath becomes totally
unbearable to people around you and yourself, then you might think of having
a tonsillectomy. That's last-case scenario though, because your tonsils are
good things to have in your body; their kind of like your liver, they absorb
bad stuff that enters your body so that it doesn't go to other places/organs
where things could get much worse.
Hope that helps, and uh, also carry breath mints w/you all the time.
