While I am seeking opinions regarding a surgical options for my right
turbinate which blocks my nasal passage way, I know I need to also find
a remedy for the cause of the swelling, that surgury alone will
probably not be the cure.

Winter is the worst time for me.  I have tested positive for allergies,
dust mites, pollen, & ragweed.  Allegra helps in the summer and I am
fine if I take it in time.  However the winter time problems start when
I turn on the heat, allegra not as effective in winter, & I dont know
if nasacort is really helping me yet--been 2 wks.

My question: is it just the irritation of dry heat that causes
swelling?

I dont get swelling when I have the central air on.
I should mention, I work at home, so I am always in this envoironment.

1.I adjust humidity on furnace
2.Turn off heat at night
3.Use a personal humidifier also in bedroom
4.Use saline spray during day.
5. Take allegra & nasacort daily

I cant believe dust mites are the big problem, if I dont have the same
problems as intensly summer as opposed to winter. Are dustmites worse
in winter??  I have taken procautions, but could do more--like get rid
of carpet.  Expensive option right now tho.

I cannot irrigate.  I have the Grossan tips, but because my right side
is always blocked, it causes more pressure and pain because solution
does not come out! What can I do?????

I believe in the theory of irrigation, but it seems to make me worse.
I also think I really need to do it because I had several
cauterizations on my turbinates on outside (with some sort of acid) and
I believe I lost quite a bit of cilia.  Also, because of the external
cauterization, i became very sentative to smells which cause extreme
swelling also.

I dont know what else to do other than suffer thru Dec - Mar. There has
got to be an easier way. sorry this is so long.

You have a good understanding of these things....

It  may yet help.   It should.   Or try Nasonex or Flonase which may or may not
work better.  I think Nasocort is not used as much any more.

The Allegra is a drying agent and might be counterproductive.

Probably it is a contributor.

The amount of air exchange with the outside is important

Hi there

I know how you're feeling - you seem to have the identical problem to me.
Irrigation just hurts my nose and it actually produces discharge that I do
not normally get.

Does you get facial pain when it's cold? Do you suffer terribly just after
you've hoovered? (vacuumed)

I am also highly allergic to dust mite which seems to be the big trigger.

Here is the method I use .. I really hope it helps!

Morning - nasal spray ('Rhinodoron' here in the UK salt / aloe vera etc -
nothing too drastic), IMMEDIATELY followed by steam breathing. I actually
pour in the kettle water (to the bathroom sink) and grab for the spray. Then
a towel over the head and deep breathing through the nostrils for about five
minutes. I don't swallow and a lot of the solution will come back down
bringing anything with it. I then empty it all into the toilet / sink.

If my nose is really blocked, or partially blocked - then I add a little
Vicks Vaporub into the sink with the boiling water - this is a total master
for clearing the nose.

Now, sometimes when I breathe back out, a little of the solution  / mucus
will block the clear passage to breathe in the steam. I then clear my nose
(I can't blow as it gives me pain / headcahes) by simply using a tissue, or
very, very gently blow on rare occasions to clear - and continue inhaling.

I am careful not to breathe in too quickly as I use boiling water (it works
best for me - not saying it's particularly wise)

I do this once in the morning, and once at night - and if I feel I need to,
also in the afternoon.

At night, I immediately follow this with a large amount of Vicks on an old
T-shirt (just under my chin) and have a tilting bed that's set with the head
end up - as the minute I lay flat my nose blocks. I have the window ajar,
but not open.

It's the first thing I do when I wake up again in the morning - as for this
dry nose - night time is the enemy!!

The Vicks is also good during the day, as it keeps the nose more moist and
less dry / sensitive than usual (don't ask my how - but it definitely
works) - if you're cool walking about like you've been dribbling for four
hours (large moist patch on the chest) then it provides some relief.

Also - as I'm writing this post, my 'NoZoil' has just arrived (sesame seed
oil drops for the nose to keep moist) So I'll report back about it's
effectiveness! :)

Hope this helps a little - I know how awful it can be! :)

Yea, this has been a B A D year in Georgia as well.  I suspect mold or
something growing in the furnace.

Does anyone know for sure?

I've considered a new heat/air system it's been so bad for way too long.
