Predisone withdrawal

I've been taking 20mg per day in four separate does of 5mg at 8 hour
intervals for a little over two months now. Already experiencing signs
of 'moon face' and have a fat pad forming on my neck at the top of my
spine. The side effects are starting to frighten me.

I want to start weaning off this. Anyone have any advice on how to
proceeed in order to minimize withdrawal symptoms? Can I knock it down
by 5mg, staying at 15mg for say a couple days then go down to 10mg for
a couple days or is that too steep?

I'm no expert, but if you are taking 5 mg every 8 hours then it seems to
me that you are already at 15 mg/day.

Ooops,  I meant 5mg every 6 hours.

Don't try this yourself.

See a doctor who will set up a tapered schedule for you based on the
dose and the length of time you've been on it.

Thanks Steven. That is good advice. I *know* I should consult my
doctor about this but I'm afraid to because he prescribed prednisone
to me orignally and I found that it was the only thing that seemed to
really, really help with the inflammation but he wanted me to stop and
tapered me off the dose he had put me on and then I went out and
bought more prednisone on my own and started self-medicating. I don't
want to ruin my relationship with this doc or make him mistrust me.

I did some web searches and found the following:

http://renux.dmed.ed.ac.uk/EdREN/Handbookbits/TPHdbkbits/HDBKprednis.html

I am not a physician and do not recommend the above to be a substitute for the
advice of a physician.

As you know, it would be best to have a doctor help you with this weaning
off prednisone.

I completely understand your feeling of being embarrassed to tell him that
you self-medicated, bought the med illegally (I would guess, without an RX),
that you didn't follow his directions. I would have the same feeling in your
shoes.

However, if you analyze it logically, what could the negative effects be of
discussing this with your doctor, and having him help you wean off the med?

He would chide you for doing what you did, say you shouldn't have done it,
don't do it again, etc. That would certainly be embarrassing, but would it
kill you?

I certainly don't think he would dismiss you as his patient, turn you in to
the authorities for purchasing the med without an RX, etc. He would still
treat you, and do the best he could to help you wean from the med.

So--if the choice is between 1)embarrassment, and 2) taking risks with your
health (which could kill you), which should it be?

By the way, you might want to take a look at a book (in any case) by
flautist Eugenia Zukerman, called "Coping with Prednisone".

Thanks MS.

Sounds like very well considered, good advice to me.

Much appreciated.

I was on Predisone for 2 months,
(1)5mg in morning and (1) at night. Equaling 10 mg per day.

To weaning me off  Predisone My Dr. had me take 1 in morning & 1/2 half at
night for 1 week,

then 1 in morning for 1 week,

then 1/2 in morning for 1 week then nothing.
Pain got so bad I had to get back on Predisone FOR NOW!  It seems to be
the answer to my pain.  However, Predisone can cause Diabetes and my blood
sugar has rise to diabetic level so I have to get off of it again &
hopefully it will come back down.  What a trade off!

I have seen doctors on the average of 2 times a month for the last 7 years
so I am not just speaking off the cuff.   Feel free to email me  if you
would like. healthissues45@yahoo.com

I do not sell anything, I am just a person trying to find relief for my
pain.
