jhansen@ghtltd.com - 01 Jan 2005 18:47 GMT Hello,
I've been experiencing really bad lightheadedness recently, and I wanted to see if anyone else has ever shared my symptoms...I'd feel better if I knew they were common for sinus infections or general sinusitis.
About 3 months ago, I started working out again (after not having done so for years). After the 2nd time at the gym, I started getting pretty lightheaded on and off. At times, it would almost make me pass out. At other times, I was symptom free. I went to the doctor, she diagnosed me as having a sinus or ear infection, and gave me antiobiotics. I took those for 10 days, and by day 8, it had mostly cleared up. The lightheadedness went a way for a while, but for the past 3 months, it would come and go. I would get bouts of lightheadedness, where I'd be at work or on the phone, and would start seeing stars and get a wave of anxiety and would get cold and clammy.
Two weeks ago, it got to the point where I couldn't go to work. After a week of feeling like this, I woke up one morning and could barely get out of bed. There was no spinning - just lightheadedness, and a feeling of complete exhaustion. Spent two separate days in the ER having all sorts of tests done, and everything came back fine, except for swelling in the sinuses. At this time, I also got horrible pressure in my face and forehead (in all 4 sinuses). I've been on Augmentin for 4.5 days now, and I feel better physically (not as lethargic), but the lightheadedness is still about the same. I can't really leave the house. The pressure seems to have peaked, but its not getting much better, and it almost feels like its started moving to my ears as well.
I also have pretty bad seasonal allergies, and this whole thing started in Sept, right around the beginning of the hayfever season, so it might not have anything to do with working out. I do take Zyrtec however, and was taking Flonase up until Sept (don't take it anymore).
I'd just like to know if anyone else has experienced really bad sinus pressure (and associated headaches and neck/shoulder pain) and pretty bad lightheadedness from a sinus infection (or anything else). I feel perfectly fine with the exception of the things noted above.
Things the doctors have ruled out: mono, any blood/sugar issues, heart related, brain related, bleeding, etc.
I'd greatly appreciate it if anyone with similar symptoms would share their experiences, especially how long it took for it to go away. I feel like if it was a sinus infection, I should be feeling better after 5 days. I also find it strange that the sinus pressure seems to have STARTED at the beginning of the treatment. Could destroying bacteria in your sinuses actually increase the pressure/pain? Thanks in advance,
-James

Yes, ive had the anxiety - the seeing stars, and the cold/clammy feeling!! was very bizarre the first few times, but now.... its just annoying!

Its quite common for sinus infections to spread to the ear - fear not - and that can also make the lightheadedness & dizzyness feel worse!

I get the pressure and neck/shoulder stuff a lot too - and even though i feel otherwise "fine" - though a little drained some days - the doctor has, for me, ruled out mostly everything else too leaving it as a sinus infection. Dont worry - i think most people have had these symptoms. Last week for example, my sinus pressure and headaches/neck aches and so forth were REALLY bad - had me laid up at home for a couple of days feeling very sorry for myself.

Could destroying bacteria > in your sinuses actually increase the pressure/pain? Lightheadedness and dizziness are common symptoms of sinusitis. Additionally, when you start to feel it coming on, perhaps you're getting anxious--the cold clammy feeling sounds could be an anxiety attack or panic attack that exacerbates the dizziness.
Antibiotics don't always work against sinus infections. The fact that it took 8 days for your symptoms to clear up suggests that the antibiotic was only moderately effective. Sinus infections are stubborn and even after you find the right antibiotic, you may need to be on it for several weeks. The usual 10-day course (which is what you had) is often just not enough to completely knock out a sinus infection. And then after you've finished the 10-day course, the infection can flare up again.
There are other antibiotics to try--with a real long course (3 weeks minimum). Levaquin or Avelox are two of the "big guns". If they won't work either, then it's time to see an ENT specialist.
When you're feeling anxious, sit down in a nice quiet place and try meditation.

Shirley Thebaglady - 02 Jan 2005 11:37 GMT I get those symptoms when I have fluid or infection in my inner ear. I have fallen down, could not get out of a bath tub too. Could not get out of bed as when I stood up was very dizzy.
I've had allergies, sinus problems for many years and a lot of inner ear infections. MD said I have post nasal drip and that is the cause. I am supposed to be useing a Saline rinse at night and morning.

ENTconsult - 02 Jan 2005 19:24 GMT Bad sinus pressure does not cause dizzyness that you describe. However pressure in the inner ear does. Suggest seeing an ENT or Neurologist . Murray Grossan, M.D. http://www.ent-consult.com
Vikas - 04 Jan 2005 18:13 GMT also.... does anyone else get dry eyes with their sinus problems?????

Babak - 07 Feb 2005 16:11 GMT Hi,
These conditions, which were described, are very much similar to what I have been experiencing since Nov. 2004. In mid November, I started feeling extremely lightheaded, very similar to being awfully drunk?I had the feeling all the times during the day. After seeing my primary care Doctor, she diagnosed that it was sinus infection sinus I sounded congested (BTW, I have seasonal allergy and I am congested all the times). She prescribed AUGMENTIN 875MG, (AMOXICILIN AND CLAVULANATE POTASSIUM), one tablet every 12 hrs for 10 days. 24 hours after taking the tablets I was back to normal condition, no lightheadedness, perfect. Right after finishing the course, within 12-24 hrs, my condition started deteriorating, feelings of extreme lightheadedness, and a crippling one really accompanied by occasional feeling of complete exhaustion and fatigue. It took me about 6 days to see my Doctor one more time and ask her for more AUGMENTIN Tablets. Right after taking them I again felt normal. Since that time I have been on and off the AUGMENTIN and my condition improves and deteriorates accordingly. I saw an ENT specialist after a while and he prescribed some nasal spray and Clariton to cure my allergy symptoms, they didn?t do much. I have the feeling of tightness and dryness of eyes as well. Last time I saw the ENT specialist, he said, I needed to see a neurologist, since sinus infection can?t cause such things. I don?t have any mucus drainage from nose but I have a slight pressure on my cheeks and forehead (sinus areas) sometimes, occasionally a mild pain as well. I don?t think it is neurological since antibiotics help. Could anybody give me some advices? Regards,

Can be due to the sinus infection's affecting the ear's balance mechanism (which often happens).

However, the antiobiotic also has mild anti-inflamamatory peoperties which also may have been helping you.

Antihistamines are ot a good idea for sinutis,in the opinion of many ENT's.

Have you been tested for anemia or low thyroid?

It should have read:
Antihistamines are *not* a good idea for sinusitis in the opinion of many ENT's.
Babak - 08 Feb 2005 15:56 GMT Hi,
Thanks a lot for your response. I took AUGMENTIN 875 for a 10-day period, then another 10-day period, then a three-week period and one more time for two-week-course, with some interruption (4-5 days) between. They don?t help much anymore (though I certainly feel better by taking them). I have a normal diet. My only complain is this feeling of strong lightheadedness!! The dryness of eyes is not a problem; it occurred only a couple of times. Another Doctor (online help) suggested that it could be autoimmune vasculitide such as Churg-Strauss syndrome (CSS) or Wegener's granulomatosis (WG). Recently patches of red dots have appeared on my body, near the joints and they are itchy. That might suggest WG -- sounds scary :( (never had them before) My own feeling is that, it is an ordinary sinus infection, that 10-day course was not enough and the long interruptions between each course made the bacteria immune to Amoxicilin, I may need a much stronger Antibiotics for a long time!
Regards, Babak,

In any case, regardless of everything else, you need to reduce whatever is causing the sinsu inflammation. Dust and mold are the usual culprits.
