My First Sinus Surgery

Let me first say that I have used discussion groups very little.

My allergist has had me on Allegra-D and Nasonex and QVAR40 for the last
year.

I had my first sinus surgery on the 16th and will see  my doctor for the
first time since on the 22nd.  I had a deviated septum which he corrected.
Is this why my nose is soooo sore?  My wife said I was full of polyps and he
was not able to get all of them he wanted.  He told her that he would have
needed additional equipment to do this safely.  To date I cannot get any
real amount of air thru my nose.  This is all quite new to me and I am
trying to come up with questions I should ask him.  Will I need another
surgery soon?  I hope not.  My surgery lasted 3 hours and I guess there was
a lot of bleeding.  Since I woke up my nose is not too sore  but
unbelievably touchy.  An ounce would send me thru the roof.  Does anyone
have any suggestions on questions I should ask tomorrow.  (I have aspirin
sensitive asthma and eosinophilic nonallergic rhinitis).  He is a very good
Doctor and I trust him, I just feel a bit undereducated at the moment.

Thanks for your help.

Yes - the pain is from the septum. One of the first things I had done
and by far and away the most painful.

I finally had a complete 'ream' job - removed lining and bone from ALL
sinuses - and it wasn't NEAR as painful as the septoplasty.

Can I ask where that was done and how it worked out?

Ask your doctor when the stents are going to come out.  :-)

To keep your septum in place while it heals, your doctor probably
inserted a couple of pairs of stents up your nostrils to act as splints.
Those tend to block the nasal passages so it's no wonder you can't
breathe well yet.  They will be removed after your septum has healed.
And then you may see a real improvement in your breathing

Thank you guys for responding. The surgery was last Thursday, the stents
came out yesterday. When I saw them I couldn't believe they had been in my
nose, no wonder it hurt. He took out most of the stitches etc. yesterday.
Frankly, I was getting a bit overwhelmed and he stopped before he normally
would have and I see him again on the 29th. My sinuses are still a mess but
I think are gradually improving now (too slow for me).

Since you may have been through this, should I be blowing my nose at all
yet. I have used the Neil Med rinse and cannot believe all the crud the
comes out some times. He said I could start using the Nasonex again but I
didn't think to ask about Allegra-D or Sudafed. I think Afrin is out of the
picture too.

The bad news is he thinks we may need to go through this again (soon) to get
the frontal stuff he didn't get based on how well I do. The thought of
spending this years (2005) vacation recovering from another one of these
isn't much fun. My doctor said that these may re-accrue on a regular basis
and mentioned a Mao Clinic treatment for mold sensitivity. My allergist has
mentioned this before, I wonder what kind of luck people have with it.
Gentlemen thanks again for responding, I still seem to have lots of
questions about all of this. My particular case is in Davenport, Iowa.

All the best to you and your families.

Bob
