I finally bit the bullet and tiled my living room - which was the last
major living area that needed tile. Does anybody have any idea as to
whether there is some type of area rug that doesn't harbor dust mites?
e.g. jute? sisal? tatami?

any rug you use should be one you can wash in the washing machine. preferrably
q 6 weeks but longer is ok too.
There are attractive "throw rugs" that look "living room" like at the Crate and
Barrel that fit this category.
As long as it is washing machine capable, it is OK for allergy.

I have cotton area rugs on my floors. I hve allergies to those new
fabrics that the wool rugs are made of.

My allergies have been much better too.

I use to have wall-to-wall rugs and sufferered a lot with headaches and
a stuffy nose.
Now, if I get a new scatter rug- I spray it with Febreeze.
