Can anyone help with info about fungal sinusitis?
I'm not completely sure that's what I have....I'm waiting to get a CAT
scan....but I have done a wee bit of research and I think that I'm heading
in the right direction.

About 6 months ago I had a boomer case of flu and since then have not been
able to clear my sinuses properly. I get incredibly blocked up to the point
of excruciating pain and have continual  disgusting, thick, smelly, green
mucous (almost pus-like). Sometime when I bend over I feel like I've inhaled
water and it stings. I've been on 3 courses of antibiotics (did nothing) and
the only thing I think MAY be helping a tiny bit is a daily dose of
vitamins.
Can someone please help me?

Well you have a severe sinus infection that is becoming chronic that you need
to resolve.    Green just means it is infected, not necessarily that it is
fungal.

Wait for the results of the CAT scan and post them here.  That will tell a lot.
Until then not much can be said.

Drink lots of water, get lots of rest and exercise, and try to avoid allergens
and irritants.

Can anyone help with info about fungal sinusitis?

Fungal Sinusitis.
First of all, you need to understand that doctors and medical writers are
using the same words for three entirely different conditions and it is very
easy to get confused, especially by the news writers.  Fungal sinusitis can
refer to a sinus filled with a fungus; the fungus is packed into every sinus
and can be clearly seen by shining a light in the nose, and by MRI.  This type
is RARE and is primarily seen in immune—compromised persons.
Another type, also called Fungal Sinusitis, is one described by the Mayo
Clinic.  Here the fungus is in the nose and sinus, can be cultured out, but the
same fungus is seen in otherwise healthy persons.    The theory is that a
fungus is in the nose/sinus and the body’s natural defense—the
eosinophile—produces too much toxin trying to kill the fungus and that this
toxin is what is making the patient sick.  Their therapy is to try to eliminate
the fungus and thus stop the eosinophile reaction.  Others, such as Wellington
Tichenor of New York may desensitize the individual to that particular fungus.
For up to date information on this see Dr Tichenor’s web site
www.sinuses.com.  A serious difficulty with this theory is that “sick”
patients and healthy patients may both show the same fungus on culture plates.
Doctors are still investigating this and the answer is not yet in.
The Mayo concept helps explain why persons using pulsatile irrigation
for chronic sinusitis improve, as pulsatile irrigation is best for removing
mucus and the eosinophile products from the nose.
A third type of fungal sinusitis is one where polyps or other
conditions block an area of he nose and a fungus grows here for lack of
drainage. Usually the patient recovers when the blockage is removed.
At this time, few allergists or ENTdoctors find “Mayo Type” fungal
sinusitis among their patients. Popular antifungal medications include
Amphotericin B, Fluconazole (Diflucan), and Itraconazole (Sporonex) that are
available in liquid form for irrigation or topical use.

After suffering with multiple sinus infections, year after year, for
decades, I experimented with flooding my nasal passages with a mixture of
diluted 3% hydrogen peroxide, baking soda and kosher salt. In order to flood
my nasal passages and keep them flooded, I keep my forehead pointed
downward. I keep my forehead down for quite a while, hoping that the
anti-infective mixture can get to the infected area(s) within my sinuses and
nasal passages.
.
It works! I have been sinus infection free for about 3 years. I think that I
had chronic infection problems with my turbinates, so flooding my nasal
passages with the anti-infective mixture worked very well, for me, since the
infected areas were fairly easy to reach.
.
I have fully documented my experience and how I did it at Healthboards.com.
There are posts there by people who have tried my "upside down sinus
flooding" and have received either partial relief or total relief. There are
also posts there from those who it hasn't helped, and by those who don't
think that it is a good idea. I have no connection at all with Healthboards.
I use it because I consider it to be the best facility for discussing health
problems on the Internet.
