Just an update with my sinus cure. A few months back I was planning a
trip to Mayo. My insurance denied my claim and I ended up going to a
local allergist from a recommedation from one of the folks at referals
center.
At the time of my last post I told you that this Allergist said that I
definatly have sinusitus with bactierial and possable fungal infection
as well. His plan was to take me on a long trip with many different
antibiotics to be sure and get every strain of bactieria known to
infect sinuses. He started me on a one month course of Augmentin XR. I
went back to his office when I was finished with the antibiotic. He
seemed discuraged that I had no improvement with the Augmentin XR.
That was a little hard to take. He seemed so positive about his plan
during my first visit and now it looked as though he wanted to give up
because this antibiotic had no effect on me. We both agreed to
continue his plan of antibiotics and think about seeing and ENT for
possable surgery and a culture. He sent me home with a perscription
for my next antibiotic, Avelox.
I started the Avelox on Wednesday of last week I think. Over the
weekend I feel fantastic! I seem to be clearing up! Less blowing. I
can't beleive it. I think I'm on my wat to being cured. Its been so
long since I had normal sinuses I'm not really sure what its suppossed
to feel like. I know I'm not fully cured yet or anything but I these
last few days have been so exciting for me. I've been so depressed for
so long now. Hating to wake in the morning to have to deal with my
sick sinus all day. I had searched everywhere. Numerous doctors. I had
nearly accepted that I may feel this way for the rest of my life. I
can't wait to get back to tell the doctor. I want to thank him for
being so concerned with my problems and being up to date on his
practice. I hope that we continue his original plan and then follow up
with CT scans to see how things look. I really can't believe this is
happening to me. Finally!
Just a little good news on a Monday.

Hello,
Cephalexin (the generic) works great right now - donot
know about the tomorrows of tomorrows.
You better read this:

Avelox / Moxifloxacin Hydrochloride Lawsuit:

Now you got rid of the bacterial infection, which youwill
soon find made the fungus infection worse. What then????
Use a little, gentle, fine, salt "spray" now and then and/or
Robitussin (green label) to keep the mucous thin/flowing.
Remember the "Saying":
Where there is irritation;
There is blockage;
Where there is blockage;
There is swelling;
Where there is swelling;
There is infection.

David, her is My Mayo Experience (Short Version).
7 years ago got Asthma (real bad asthma), Chronic Sinus Condition, and
GERD all at once. Had been taking tons of meds including antibiotics
and prednisone about 4-5 times a year.
One and a half years ago went to Mayo specifically for the Antifungal
stuff.
Funny, the Mayo Doc kind of poh poh my self-diagnosis (actually my
local Doc's) even after looking up my nose. Doc said I was getting a
CT scan in an hour. Zipped in got the CT Scan done. 3 hours later
the Docs office, Doc pulls up the scan on the office computer, and
says, "Hey your sinus are really bad". In my head I said to my self
"no sh&$", that's why I'm here :-)
Any way Doc gives me a prescription for the Nasal Flush version of the
Antifungal Med called Intraconazole. Some months later... Nothing...
Go back to Mayo and get another version of the Antifungal Med called
Voriconazole. 2 puffs each nostril twice a day, very simple compared
to a flush.
Results: After "Hating to wake in the morning to have to deal with my
sick sinus [and asthma] all day", I feel terrific now for 6 months.
I still do Saline Nasal Flushes periodically (http://www.neilmed.com)
and singulair, but no more Flonase, Previcid, and Advair was reduced
from the 500/50 to the 100/50. Most importantly no antibiotics or
Predisone for over 6 months, a record for me. I had actually quit the
Advair completely for a month and was fine, but the asthma doc wanted
me on some over the winter "just in case".
Any way, I am fairly certain the Voriconazole has been the big change.
If I miss taking the med one time, I notice a difference in my sinus.
Interestingly the last time I ordered the Voriconazole from Mayo's
Pharmacy, I got a call back from Mayo saying they sold the patent and
now I needed to get the Voriconazole from Anazao Health
(http://www.anazaohealth.com/content.cfm?page_id=45). Still waiting
on the first order from Anazao but I do know that the bill will be
$67. Hope the insurance company pays. From Mayo the Complete charge
was $6.75 including shipping. What a deal!!!
Mayo Clinic Price, not sure. The insurance company paid. But I would
have gladly paid out of pocket for my current improved condition.
Good look, hopefully everything works out with your current plan.
If not, have your doc order up the antifungal stuff from Anazao Health
(as I said above I do not have my first fill from Anazao, just
assuming it will be fine).

Uride2... did you have nasal polyps? If so how bad were the polyps
and did they go away with the Voriconazole?

I had polyps removed with Surgery in 1998. I do not believe I had
polyps when starting the anti-fungal medications.

I just wanted to give another update yet again. I just went back to my
doc again to let him know that the Avelox was still not doing any good.
On that day I started to feel better but I didn't think much of it. I
have periods like that alot of the time. Well it continued this time. I
continued to feel better the rest of the day and over night. I called
the doc to inform him. We agreed that I should continue on the avelox
for another 2 weeks. I'm feeling good and I'm so excited. It feels so
good to releive that pressure and to be able to take in fresh air
through my nose.

Funny that you post today. I was just about to give another update
today. Not a good one though. For what ever reason I seem to have
regressed a bit the last few days while still using the avelox! I saw
5 really promising days after I started and now its seems to be almost
as bad as prior. I'm not sure what that means. The antibotic working
should indicate that there is indeed a bacterial infection in there.
It stopping be effective could be many things. I'm not sure how to
interprit that. At this point my doctor and I have a plan. Continue to
take the Avelox for another week. If no improvements, I will go to ENT
and have cultures done to try and pinpoint bacteria or fungus. I will
also switch to another anitbiotic again. Ketek is the one I think he
wanted me to try next.
I still have not ruled out going to Mayo and I thank you for your
sharing your experience there. I saving that for trip for my last
hope. I will show my doctor your post though. He is very open about
things and I think he will accept it. Other doctors sometime will
poo-poo those types information.
