~ÐÅRÅ~ - 22 Nov 2004 16:55 GMT Hi All, I'm on day 3 of antibiotics: Amoxicillin 875 mg + clavulunate potassium 125 mg - 2 x's daily. I woke up this morning and for the first time in two months, I could SMELL. I saline irrigated as soon as I woke up, headed to the kitchen to make hot tea, and I could smell the tuna can I had drained to make salad last night. This was such a pleasant experience at long last, even though I have not been able to taste or smell a thing in 2 mo's. (talk about deprivation and misery). So I am feeling hopeful and just hope that my infection does indeed go away through this 3rd round of antibiotics (along with irrigation) as I hadn't irrigated or knew about it in the previous 2 rounds of antibiotics meant for an upper tooth absess. I have no maxillary pressure, lately, no pain anywhere no headaches, nothing but the yellow colored mucus, but this is only day 3 of antibiotics. My question to anyone including Dr. Grossan, is that upon examination last friday, the nurse prac. stated I had a polyp. I was so very congested on that left side, and how she could see any polyp visible with her nasal sort of pointed flashlight aparatus made me question what could be seen. Now, exactly what IS a polyp? If I knock this infection for good, and keep on irrigating as preventative therapy, will this polyp heal? I have no previous history of any sinusitis, the impetus for this misery came about due to a long overdue absessed upper tooth that needed extracting, compromising my health in this direction; so I'm not allergy prone, to foods, or pollen. Given that plus, if this is an isolated incident due to the now extracted and absessed tooth, I'm hopeful that my recovery will be PERMANENT. However, my concerns lie with this Polyp issue. Will this be my stumbling block? Please shed some light on this for me, if you can. With great empathy for you all, and still striving for recovery and wellness.. Dara

I think he was looking at a turbinate! He was very preoccupied by polyps.
So I would waut until it is confirmed.....

I don't understand this craziness. Clear, then stopped up, got so fed up I used a nasal spray to function throughout my day of business.

They are very great differences among them.
Don't take Afrin for more than 3 days or you will get rebound congestion as ypu become addicted to it.
Prescription steroid nasal sprays do nto have that problem..
~ÐÅRÅ~ - 24 Nov 2004 18:02 GMT I'm using the generic version of Afrin sold at Walgreens. It has the same ingredient. It's called extra moisturizing "Anefrin" nasal spray. Has ONE ingredient: Oxymetalzoline HCI 0.05%. My nurse practitioner told me to get Afrin, I had the other one already, then compared labels and saw that they were the same thing. I was ahead of her... LOL! Sometimes we doctor ourselves. I avoid using nasal spray for the most part, unless I'm around people and don't want to be using ten million tissues all day long. I had a good day yesterday.. I could even taste for most of the day. Then last night I decided to join some people and have some fun, and have a few drinks. NOT the thing to do with sinusitis. I discovered that alcohol plugged me up all over again, and today I am congested and can't taste a thing. Don't consume any alcohol beverages while dealing with this thing. Its not worth it and it relapses any progress. Anyone else find this to be true? By the 2nd drink, my nose decided to stop up. I don't know what causes this either, does anyone know why? I won't do that again. I'm guessing that its due to the dehydrating effects of alcohol. I have absolutely NO food allergies or pollen allergies. I'm not allergic to a THING. I've irrigated twice already this morn, 4 oz bottle. Trying to get the congestion to loosen up. Dara

Dara Hello, Cigarette smoke is the real killer . . . It is what is in the beverage, not so much the alcohol. The spray you use probably has alcohol in it. Your environment is just about the answer when all else fails. Are you trying Robitussian (green label); actually Guaifenesin, for thinning out your mucous - stop irrigating, and start a gentle, fine, mist spray w/breathing in, and do it frequently, and use the salt solution: 2 teaspoons of sea salt in one pint of water. A few drops of alcohol in the solution may help keep down the self-contamination - or try Listerene. Do it day and night, however the combination of sea salt and Guaifenesin may make big changes in your life. Stay away from all sugar, white flour, and cows' milk products. DO NOT hold the spray container tight against your nose. Force will only plunge the bacteria and fungus deep into places where it doesnot belong. - big changes coming your way - yup (: http://www.paminifarm.com
~ÐÅRÅ~ - 26 Nov 2004 01:51 GMT I've read about the green label robitussin and the mentioned ingredient but have not purchased it. I really want to stay with the irrigating, my only concern is that the type of irrigation bottle, may be too forceful with its sports pop up top, I really flush it and it's no fine mist. My concern is that I may be doing more harm than good, but today I had a good day and could even taste my food. I'm only half congested on that left side. As for alcohol beverages, and the soda or mix used, I disagree. Soft drinks don't make me feel "swollen" I believe its the dehydrating effects of alcohol, and yeah, cig smoke sure is a culprit too. However, for Dr. Grossan, I'm not fond of vodka or beer so I think I'll just abstain. I need to really find a home style apparatus that can create a finer mist or spray and before I'd add any drop of rubbing alcohol to the solution, I'd use peroxide first. It seems to me, that even just a drop would be very burning and risk damage! My nurse prac. said dont even use any peroxide, its too destructive to the delicate tissues.
ENTconsult - 25 Nov 2004 05:56 GMT Vodka and beer are the least likely to clog the nose or cause a migraine. Murray Grossan, M.D. http://www.ent-consult.com
ENTconsult - 23 Nov 2004 17:00 GMT you asked what are nasal polyps? Nasal Polyps Nasal polyps are like grapes or bags of water and they can form in the nose and sinuses. Science really doesn’t know exactly why Bill gets it and his identical twin Harry doesn’t. It is felt to be allergy related, but expert allergy management has not cleared the presence of polyps, or their return after removal, in many patients. Perhaps there are different mechanisms that cause them. Essentially the liquid that your nose creates is supposed to leak out into your nasal chamber. But for some reason, the liquid accumulates within the cell wall and the cell enlarges to grape size. This not only blocks breathing, but also sinus drainage as well. Often polyps can be shrunk by a course of oral prednisone combined with an antibiotic. The antibiotic is needed because any infection can enlarge the polyps. Most doctors prescribe a cortisone spray to be used after the polyps shrink to prevent regrowth. Surgical removal may be disappointing because the same factors that caused the polyps to start in the first place are still present. Persons with nasal polyps must avoid aspirin, salicylates, and related products. For a complete list of salicylate products see http://www.nlm.nih.gov/medlineplus/druginfo/uspdi/202515.html. These are known polyp stimulators. *
