I was first diagnosed with prostatitis 25 years ago. That turned into
chronic prostatitis over the years. Went through many of the herbal
treatments and vitamin and minerals. Did not do much for me but thin
my wallet. They boast alot and the results are minor if any. It there
was something that really worked we would ALL know about it and be
using it. Right now this is what it boils down to. I use metamicil to
keep my stools soft. Very important. It relieves alot of pressure on
the prostate that hard stools produce. My urologist gives me 7 to 10
days of septra or cipro a month. And 30 to 40 percocets a month. The
pain medication makes the difference between being almost totally
debilitated on a heating pad in front of the tv only to get up to use
the bathroom or eat and being able to be painless and lead a normal
life and be active. The antibiotics help my inflammation and urine
flow. The pain medication usually runs out about the 3rd week and then
I just tough it out with regular generic ibuprofen from Walmart. And
that way the risk of addiction is low. For me the benefits far far
outweigh the risks and the alternative. I also stay away from anything
with caffeine. No coffee. No colas. No chocolates. And definitely no
alcohol. I do smoke a pack a day and I am sure this adds to the
irritation. So I intend to quit smoking within the next few months. I
quit once for 8 years and I can do it again. So this is what's working
best for me now. And very well.
I am sure many of you have different treatments, regimes and routines.
I would like to hear about them......So that do you guys do for
relief?

Dave,
I think you have Chronic Pelvic Pain Syndrome but the question is "Do you
have Prostatitis?" I don't believe it is at all certain that you have an
inflamed prostate but you may very well have inflamation in the area of the
prostate. I too was diagnosed with prostatitis about 30 years ago and mine
was clearly bacterial as evidenced by cultures. Mine responds to antibiotics
but alas, it does not last. It always comes back. I do not experience the
pain that you seem to suffer between bouts. I do not believe that mine is
sensitive to things like spices, caffeine, alcohol, etc. I have tried a lot
of things also and the therapy that works best for me is massage combined
with antibiotics. After a one month therapy session, I feel virtually normal
for an extended period. I can usually tell when a new bout is coming on as
urination frequency will start to increase. This occurs about twice a year.
You take antibiotics also but they probably are only providing inflamatory
relief and not antibacterial relief. I hope you find a better therapy.

I can tell you what I do but you wont approve. Due to the need to work and
the constant tiredness I suffer due to another health problem, I have a lot
of caffeine every morning. That keeps the stools soft as it is a diuretic.

I must say though, I wonder if soft stools all the time is a good idea. See,
doesn't the occasional hard stool help to move some of the nasty stuff
THROUGH the prostate, albeit unintentionally?

i am in pretty much the same boat as you. i have to take antibiotic's,
oxycodone, and zantac to live a halfway normal life.i get my abx's from
ciprofloxin.com. get the oxycodone from the v.a.my zantaz from the
drug
store.i however did quit smoking, but it made no difference.quitting
drinking helped a little.not sure on spicy foods.when it gets really
bad i take 2 500 mg cipro per day for 3 days then cut back to 250 mg
2 times a day for about a week.i take the oxycodone everyday. i  take
2
zantac's everyday.i also use a heating pad on my back in the
evening's.
doing this i am able to work. i have been taking the oxycodone for
approximately 7 months. don't seem to have any addiction problem
with it.i'm lucky because the v.a. gives me 120 tablets per month.
i am not sure i even have c.p. but my back hurts and my nuts hurt.
i think a have several problems that when combined play wholly hell
with
me. i am almost positive that i have some major back problem, plus
a problem with my bowels and rectum and some kind of infection or
inflammation somewhere in my pelvic region.by the way i have had this

problem for over 40 years.
