Why is Vioxx my magic elixir?

I am 57 and have had symptoms of prostate problems for 20 years.  But
because I am a very anxious person and my prostate has always checked
out as OK, the best medical advice I've received is that I just focus
all my stress to my pelvic region and hence the symptoms - primarily
frequent unrination and inabilty to completely empty my bladder.

Until three months ago, my symptoms were never debilitating nor had
any adverse effects on my lifestyle.  Since then it has been real bad.
A constant urge to urinate, a strange uncomfortable sensation in my
penis and sometimes a pain in my right testicle with these symptoms
being worst when I am running.

These symptoms began around the time I was doing ultra-strenuous
sprinting (harder than at any time since I was a teenager) in
preparation for some senior senior sprinting events.  They also began
right around the time I felt like I had pulled something deep in my
buttocks area. The urologists don't have a clue.  I have tried
everything from Saw Palmetto, changes in my diet, taken off running,
and much more. Then I decided to try 25mg of Vioxx daily.  Presto!
The symptoms have lessened considerably and at times have gone
completely away. Any ideas what is going on?  Could I have aggravated
the muscles around my prostate or bladder neck during my strenuous
running?

I am a little older than you, just had my 60th birthday. You say that
your symptoms were never debilitating. I would say the opposite: my
symptoms were terribly debilitating and it has taken every kind of care
from a urologist, plus nutritional remedies such as rooibos tea, etc,
etc, to make me better. Now even in my much improved state, on a bad day
I can still have frequent urination to a degree that is a bother.

Anyway, I find that 2 aspirin can give tremendous relief. This was not
true when I was so terribly sick. There is a delay of hours, as if the
aspirin reduces inflammation and then some abused little muscle begins
to relax. I use regular cheap aspirin, not ibuprofen, acetaminophen, etc.

At another time my status was not like yours, but now perhaps it is. I
cannot give a fancy explanation.

Be sure that you read some of the bad news about Vioxx. I took Celebrex
at one time and it upset my digestive tract terribly, and contrary to
the maker's claims. More recently, there is some news about those cox-2
inhibitors causing heart disease or something. I bet a web search will
turn up news on these topics.

Well Vioxx is an NSAID and does reduce muscle inflammation.
I used to take Naproxen for pain control and enjoyed the added benefit
of reduced muscle inflammation from it
If I remember correctly Vioxx contains sulfanomides which are the most
effective anti-inflammitories available in the NSAID
family.(Unfortunately I deathly allergic to them myself.)

Ten years older and this my latest results.

NSAID (non steroidal anti inflammatoy drugs) such as
Diclofenac - Voltaren (targetting the prostaglandin cycle)
50 mg 3 times a day after food with urinary alkalinising
agents (citrate or sodium bicarb half teaspoon 4 times
a day on an empty stamach - is that a hard ask? :-)
and I have had enough relief to be grateful!

Life was sure miserable. I went from toilet to toilet
wherever I went. It was sugested I write a book about
'The urinals of the World' -  I knew them all.

Obviously it won't help everyone but it's worth a try.
The alkaline urine will ultimately disolve calculi
susceptible to pH (should that be your problem) and it is real cheap.
The NSAID will reduce the swelling and dicomfort (hopefully).

Good luck
