My quick story:

1 week of onset of pain.  Symptoms mainly severe burning in
"left side" of head of penis.  Not related to uriniation.  Just
a constant burn.  I got to Emergency Room, they give me shot
in butt of antibiotics, and 4 pills.  Pain disappears after 1 days,
but starts to come back after 2 days.

I go to uro, he gives me Cipro for 2 weeks.  It starts working
after 1 week, pain almost gone, then pain returns on the last day.
He switches me to Doxycycline.   I take for 4 days, and pain then
becomes severe.

I go to a different uro.  He diagnosis me with prostatitis, and
stops the doxcyclcline.  He wants to wait 4 days and drain my prostate
to check for bacteria.  I wait 2 days, and get in excruciating
pain.   I get on pain killers ( which is all that is keeping me
going - can't work though...), and he has me do a cat scan because
"prostatits shouldn't cause this much pain ".

Yesterday, the results of cat scan show nothing unusual.  He
pushes on my prostrate , not enough to come out of my urethra, and
has me pee in a cup to get a sample to check for bacteria. ( not
sure he did it right ).

I can tell he's close to throwing his arms up.  He says if the
culture is negative the only thing left is to use a scope through
my urethra.  Otherwise, he says he'd send me to a "pain" guy.

I'm presently incapacitated.  I cannot work.   This level of pain
has been happening for 4 days now.
Remember total onset of this problem has been about a month, with
about 2.5 weeks of antibiotics..

 Any opinions are appreciated.

 My thoughts:

1 - could this just be recurring urethritis, and cipro nearly knocked it
out and i just needed another week, and no change to doxycycline?  ( I'm
wanting to see cultures before i take another antibiotic though...is what
i'm thinking...)
2 - I'm leaning to run out to Tuscon for the Polacheck treatment.

Thanks,
Gary

"IQ TSTR" is just a troll. He's never been treated by Dr. Polacheck, and his
main reason for posting these pro-Polacheck messages is to piss people off. He
posts this crap in an attempt to start a flame war. The idiot can't even spell
Polacheck's name correctly! LOL!

If the ABX's relieved the symptoms then get back on them.
Find a doctor who's willing to write the script and get a long term
script. (two weeks is just not enough. I had times when I'd take a
course for as much as two months.)
You're problems are much like those most of us suffer from, except in
your case it's seems a case of rapid onset and a really nasty bug.
I'm ssuming you were tested for STD's? If not have the doc run those
tests as well.(there ar some very tough diseases out there that have
mutated and can really attack one in an aggressive manner.)
Most of us here have gone throught the process of minimal dose
treatment when dealing with a bacterial infection.
I for one can't help but believe if the doctors had taken the attitude
to be aggressive and give us the highest and longest dose of ABX's
that was possible that many would not be where we are today.
With a bacteria that had had time to develop an immunity to any of the
ABX's that could be used, leaving us with an untreatable infection.

Thanks,

Well, the cipro was working, except near the end, and the
doxy wasn't, so i assume you mean you think i should go back
on the cipro.

this could be an STD, but the first euro "forgot" to
run urine tests for this.  So I still don't know what
bacteria exactly that i have!  So, my second euro
had me wait 4 days without antibiotics, pushed on my prostate,
and he's going to test.

Don't you think i should wait til i absolutely verify
my bacteria before i go on cipro again, or another antibiotic?

 I'm in alot of pain.

What i like about polacheck, is that he seems to do what my
Euro is doing, but to a much greater extent.  He massages
the prostate 3 times a week, and keeps checking the culture
systematically to see what the bacteria is.  He said, sometimes
it takes a week of massages to start seeing the bacteria, then
concocts the correct antibiotic.

 Doesn't this make sense?

thanks, gary

just got back from my euro, and he could not find any infection from
the test in which he pushed on my prostate.  I made him rerun the
test today, results from this will be thursday.

My choices now are:
1 - let him stick a scope in my urethra and see if anything is
    wrong
2 - and/or go back on cipro since it had been working ( although
they can't yet find a bacteria - keep in mind that now
I am one week off of an antibiotic )
3 - go run to one of these clinics around the country

keep in mind too, that my pain level is so high that i still can't
work.

 Any opinions would be great.
thanks,
gary

My latest:

A rectal surgeon found an abscess in my rectum, which he says
causes many people to be misdiagnosed with prostatitis.  I had
surgeory yesterday.  He says around 4 days for symptom relief.
I'm in tremendous pain in my urethra.....the rectal pain is nothing
in comparison..

I have seen that a few times.  Sometimes it can be hard to make that
diagnosis.  I hope you feel better soon.

Matthew,

Have you seen this before?   Do u know  a typical prognosis?
how long do simptoms linger after abscess removal?
