I have had a serious bout of prostatitis after taking Prilosec...I
have heard similar stories from others about Aciphex and Prilosec.

Has anyone here had a  similar experience

Can anyone recommend a PPI that does not inflame the prostate?
Protonix?
Prevacid?

Thanks,

Mark

I have been struggling with CP for three years and I have been taking
prilosec for seven years. This is the first time I hear about this
connection. I see my urologists monthly and he knows I am taking omeprazole,
so I wonder if this claim have any veracity. Prevacid, protonix, nexium are
in the same family of drugs as prilosec (proton pump inhibitors), I might go
back to ranitidine just to see if it makes a difference in my symptoms.

Well this is all really strange...I am not 100% sure about the
connection.

I had one prostate infection 4 years ago, and ever since then I have
been fine (except when I took dramamine, forgetting that
antihistamines cause inflamation for me).

I just started taking Prilosec 5 days ago, and then 3 days into it I
have a bladder/prostate infection. I have no real evidence that this
was the cause, but in Prilosec's PDR the following is listed:

Urogenital: Interstitial nephritis (some with positive rechallenge),
urinary tract infection, microscopic pyuria, urinary frequency,
elevated serum creatinine, proteinuria, hematuria, glycosuria,
testicular pain, gynecomastia

Here is a link to the PDR entry.

a few people have posted that zantac has helped.in some people
however zantac causes impotence. you may want to try it and see

Well...Yesterday my Dr. said my prostate was normal and he didn't
detect any kidney stones, but he thought I was either passing a small
one, or had a minor prostate infection. I asked about hte Prilosec and
in typical doctor fashion he said "no way...that's really rare...here
take CIPRO XR twice a day (500mg)"

I couldn't afford to fill the CIPRO prescription yesterday, so I just
waited...and after 3 days being off Prilosec I am 50% better. Did I
just have an infection that cleared up on its own? Did the prilosec
cause the inflamation? Who knows....
I am going to call him tomorrow and see if he still wants me on the
Cipro..

Well it turns out it was NOT from the prilosec, but I think it was
from the pepcid?
I was takign pepcid occasionally at the same time, and stopped taking
it when I stopped the Prilosec. I then started taking zantac  a few
days later...and BINGO...back again.
Could this be a reaction I have to H2 blockers?

So I stopped taking Zantac and started with the prilosec again. No
problems this time (except that prilosec doesn't work for my GERD).

I usually have this reaction to OTC anti-histamines...but I thought
that H2 blockers didn't have much systemic activity...

So either it's the H2's or a coincidence

hmm

Why did you conclude it isnt the Prilosec?  I am very curious.  I have
had about 6 bouts of prostatitis in the last 5 years.  Typically
doesnt last more than 4-6 weeks and responds well to Cipro.  I believe
the prostate massage also helped me.  However I started taking
Prevacid in July and doubled my dose in August.  I got a case of
prostatitis in the end of September that hasnt responded to any
treatment.  I am now taking the regular dose of Prevacid about 5 days
a week and your experience makes me wonder if I am a rare case of
reacting to Prevacid?  I will completely stop taking Prevacid for the
next 4 weeks and see if that cures my problem.
