You'd probably get a better response from the newsgroup
sci.med.prostate.bph, the group that deals with enlarged prostate.
However, from what I know, I would definitely get a second and third opinion
before having this operation. Make sure all atlernatives have been
investigated, like alpha blockers (Flomax, Uroxatral, etc.), 5-alpha
reductase inhibitors (Proscar & Avodart), microwave therapy, and PVP laser
surgery.

Thanks very much
I guess he is most scared of the catheter as he has had a ureteroscopy for
the removal of a kidney stone. Will get him to check on the available drug
therapy. I guess there is no happy ending as you get old!

How long ago did he have that procedure? Did the doctor use the newer
flexible cystoscope or a rigid one? (The flexible one is gentler.)
Yes, definitely check with the sci.med.prostate.bph group. It is more
active and on topic. The second and third opinion advice is good,
please take it. Not all urologists are the same. TURP was the gold
standard but it is less so now. I tried drugs and they worked
sometimes but the side effects were unbearable. They include
dizziness, trouble thinking and a host of others.
I had a TUIP and now I wonder why doctors even bother with drug
therapy. I was under for twenty minutes and used the catheter for less
than one day. I had little to no pain post procedure. PVP and TUIP are
in and out short procedures. PVP seems to be more common and in
general, recovery is easier than TURP.

Thanks Mike 0 He had his kidney stone removed nearly 2 years ago - he
doesn't know about the cystoscope but will certainly have the info when he
sees the uro next/ Make sure he gets the later model in future
I am checking into TUIP now - it seems like a good option as his prostate at
50cc does not seem particularly large
He also does not handle drugs well.
I printed your post for him and thanks again
