Hey everyone, I'm in need of advice. I'm 33 years old and have been
living with prostatitis for quite a while now. Symptoms started about
a year ago with frequent urination and dull pain in urethra where it
travels through the perineum, scrotum and base of penis. Urologist
said my prostate felt slightly spongy, not enlarged, and semen
analysis showed a bacterial infection that would respond to Cipro.
I've been on and off Cipro for months now. It definitely cures my
symptoms after a couple weeks of being on it, but as soon as I'm off,
the symptoms come back within days. At one point I took 2 500mg cipros
per day for 3 months. Every time I see my urologist he seems flummoxed
and puts me on another course of cipro... I wonder if my wife and I
are passing it back and forth. She's been given a clean bill of
health, and has also been on levaquin just in case. Any suggestions?
Any recommended specialists in the Austin, TX area?
Thanks,
Mark

That is the case with me aswell. While I am on Bactrim it definelty
settles the symptoms. But after I quit the symptoms are back within
days. I am so out of options in this.
I am thinking maby a longer period on Bactrim without any stops, but I
am not sure.
You said you habe been on it for 3 months and that seems long enough for
me, so I honestly dont know. Maby yoú should go for it for like six
months non stop

Also have you been evaluated for stones or abcesses in the prostate. It
could be a reason for reccuring infections

What was the bacteria that was found, Mark?

If it responds to fluoroquinolones like Cipro, ask your doctor about trying
Avelox. Avelox is in the same antibiotic class as Cipro, but reportedly
better. It is supposed to be the best fluoroquinolone with the ability to
tackle gram positive and gram negative bacteria, and penetrate the prostate
well.

If you are one with a known bacterial infection then it is very plausible
that you are passing this back and forth with your wife. You have a few
options. Have your wife get tested by the same doctor who did your cultures
to see if her samples grow anything, and/or have her take the same
antibiotic as you are taking. Last but not least, it might be a very good
idea to wear a condom every single time you have oral or regular sexual
activity for the next few months to see if that makes a difference. You
can't cheat on that and must wait at least a few months to notice a
difference while your taking the antibiotic that helps you.

A few years back my doctors told me that my wife and were passing it back and forth, but this turned
out to be a slight misunderstanding on their part.
I could make it all go away indefinitely with a single dose of 1 gm of zithromax, and possibly
followed by a few days of erithromycin (sp?) or doxycycline. Then as soon as I had one ejaculation,
back it came.
One week later or 6 months later, no difference. No further symptoms till then.
Conclusion - the infection lies dormant somewhere - possibly in my left testicle, till an
ejaculation spreads it to somewhere that does not like it, like my urinary tract or something. Or
maybe the prostate is the culprit, or maybe it's the target of subsequent infection - dunno.
If I so much as j.rk off once after 3 months of "no sex", it flares up again, so I know it is not
getting passed back & forth to anybody. I've had the opportunity of some long "dry" spells between
marriages to do some experimentation, so I know the above is true, but I haven't taken the trouble
yet to find out why and to maybe cure it permanently. I've been working overseas with doctors of
questionable motives and treatment capabilities for many years. When I return home at the end of
this year I will pursue more definitive treatment.
