I have been a prostatitis sufferer for 4 years now.
My symptoms are frequent urination, weak stream and erectile
difficulties.
I have done numerous tests and they can find any bacteria.
I have tried ciproxin and doxycykline with little effect.
So I was told there are no options for me, I have to live with it.
I GP suggested that I should try Bactrim for a month.
Within 24 hours my symptoms were greatly improved.
I have also ordered a rod for self massage of the prostate. Before
Bactrim my prostate was very congested and I could not get any fluid
out, and if I did it was very think in consitency.
I continued it for a month and at the end of the course I did not think
that much about my prostatitis. Also my prostate congestion was greatly
improved, now it was much easier to obtain fluid and the fluid was much
more viscous almost like water.
However within 24 hours of stopping Bactrim my symptoms started to
worsen again.
So I quite sure my case is infectious after all, since I have been told
that Bactrim does not have any antiinflammatory effects like
tetracyklins.
I started on Bactrim again yesterday and today my symptoms are much
better again. I am just so worried that the next time I will stop it
will be worse again. Is`nt Bactrim good at eradicating infections or is
it just suppressing it? For how long should I take it to be absolultey
sure that the infection are gone? My GP prescribed me a two month
supply, will this be enough. I have red that if the prostate is full of
stones and obstructiions there is hard to get a cure, but in my case
there were not any stones of calcifications during ultrasound.
I need some advice please. Is it possible for Bactrim to eliminate the
infection for good?

Go to a top tertiary medical facility and get an evaluation,
like the Mayo Clinic.

Why don't you study this page, including the details there on Bactrim?

Bactrim is a very nasty drug; it made me quite ill. Since antibiotics haven't
"cured" you, why don't you look into pelvic muscle dysfunction as a cause of
your problems?

you may have had a bad reaction but Bactrim is decidedly *not* a nasty drug.
It is well tolerated by millions (yours truly included), it's effective and
cheap. Just like any drug it can have serious side effects on some people
and if you're unlucky enough to be one of them you will not be a happy
camper. Some people cannot tolerate aspirin - which I don't think anyone
would call a nasty drug!

The studies I have read show that other antibiotics are safer and more
effective than Bactrim at eradicating genitourinary infections.

Besides, I am talking about Bactrim in the context of treating CPPS, which has
pretty much been proved to be a nonbacterial condition. Sure, if one of the
millions of people you mention has a UTI, he will likely take a short course of
Bactrim and be cured, suffering few adverse effects. However, antibiotics are
ABUSED in the treatment of CPPS. The archives of this newsgroup prove that
many, many men have taken marathon courses of abx in an attempt to cure their
imaginary prostate infections, and the longer you take the antibiotic, the
greater the chance that you will suffer adverse effects.

I was responding to a post by a person who has already tried several
antibiotics. I am trying to encourage him to look into other treatments, since
abx obviously haven't "cured" him. Surprise, surprise!

I'm not directing my comments to anyone in particular, believe me, but
imaginary is a strong proclamation....hehe....I think the research regarding
antibiotics and disease is failing us. Face it, and blame the research.
Everyone thinks that if antibiotics fail there is no bacterial etiology.
That's pretty innocent and elementary thinking. It's not that simple. Very
crudely, this line of thinking is like using the wrong fishing bait while
fishing at a fish farm, and after waiting patiently for hours & hours
without any bites, concluding their's no fish in the well stocked lake. The
fish wanted worms instead of roe ;-) It is the job and purpose of the
researcher to provide answers for why ABX fail, and they are losing the
information battle.

Point well taken. You guys who are popping antibiotics like candy, ( when
they are obviously not working ), should take this advice seriously. It
might be time to look into other treatments and avoid the possible adverse
effects of antibiotics this poster is warning you about. Antibiotics can
cause very, very, serious damage if your not careful or unlucky.
