A year ago I was down to peeing every 2 hours, so I went to see a urologist,
he did the rectal, and decided that my prostate was enlarged. He set me up
for
a prostate biopsy and cystoscopy, also told me there was a 50% chance of
cancer as he felt a nodule. I also had the PSA test, it was 2.24. I was 57,
now 58. The biopsy came back negative. He sat me down and suggested I have
an operation to move the prostate as it was in a position close the the
urinary tract. I opted not to have the operation. Over the last year my
frequency generally ranges from 3-6 hours and is generally slightly improved
EXCEPT when I get up to go at night. Then and only then it takes about 30
seconds to start urinating and there are a number of start and stops. 90% of
the time I get up only once in the night. However if I do have to get up
twice the second time up urination begins immediately. What is the cause of
the start and stops? Why only the first time is starting difficult? There is
never any pain.

Hi Burt,
My unexpert guess and I'm not trained in medicine at all so your best
bet is to ask your doctor about these things, but my guess is your
bladder is not empting completely because you have restriction to your
urethra due to an enlarged prostate, which in turn causes you to have to
go to the bathroom frequenty.
A former co-worker had those exact same problems and he had what is
called a transurethral resection of the prostate (TURP). It involves a
overnight stay in the hospital, it's a fairly common procedure I think.
You should ask your doctor about it.
Also, I want to call your attention to a book which has about 40 pages
devoted to problems with the prostate gland. It is Dr. Patrick Walsh's
Guide to Surviving Prostate Cancer ISBN 0-446-67914-3
It has a bunch of information which I think you will find helpful.
Good luck! I hope you can see your doc and get something done about
your problem. I don't think it will get better without treatment.
