Of course I have BPH and have had symptons on and off for about 7-8
years. I am 54 and just got back from the urologist where he didn't
tell me the size of my prostate, but did tell me it is pressing on the
bladder so that the bladder looks like a crescent moon on the x-ray(had
an IVP done for a possible kidney stone). SO it must be fairly large.
He has me on flomax and it works ok, but not great.
I also have LOW testosterone levels, AGHD( Adult Growth Hormone
Defeciency........my pituitary is not functioning), and
hypogonadism......plus about 5 other medical conditions for which I
take medications. So taking testosterone injections like I am seems to
contrandicate using Proscar or any of those to shrink the prostate,
plus he doesn't want to add any more meds to my rather long list.
My quality of life score was 24 and I am planning on getting back to
using that PHysician's CHoice stuff as that really seemed to work for
me with the symptons anyways......but $$$$ is an issue right now.
At what point should I go ahead with the surgery? The urologist I see
only does the TUMT and I think I want the PVP. Is anyone elso out there
taking testosterone replacement therapy and one of the drugs for
stopping the DHT for the the prostate??
Thanks for indulging me.

Are you saying that your URO does only TURP and TUMT? That is what the
group I was going to did. From what I see TURP is becoming obsolete. I
went to this site:
http://www.laserscope.com/surgical/consumers/faq.html
and got their list of doctors (Find a Doctor) in my area that do PVP. Found
a good one that way. It ended up that he suggests trying the TUMT first.
If that doesn't work I can always do the PVP.
I dropped Flomax as it caused all kinds of aches and pains.

I went this exact route, had a Prostatron 2.5 TUMT July 2 which cleared
the half of the prostatic urethra nearest the bladder but did not clear
the half furtherist from the bladder. PVP scheduled Wednesday 2/23.
Looking forward to getting this thing behind me. The URO says that this
will be a "bladder neck sparing procedure." I hope that this is good
news in that the chances of retro are reduced to 20%. chockman@canby.com

The one thing I can not tell you is when to have surgery. This is a
very personal choice. Have surgery when you can no longer endure your
symptoms. Different people will endure different levels of symptoms
before they resort to surgery. I will venture the opinion that you
sound like you are close to making that decision.
Good luck

On the other hand, you may not want to wait too long
because the bladder becomes thick and rigid.
Follow your doctor's recomendations.

My doctor doesn't even seem to be recommending any surgery at this
point. I don't know if he is conservative or what? He claims under the
x-ray my bladder when filled looks like a crescent moon as opposed to
an oval like it should like. Sounds like the prostate is fairly large
to me.
He did do an DRE and claimed it felt normal.
