Have been on Hytrin for past 15 years, started with 2 mg per day, now on
Maximum dose of 10 mg twice a day, at age 67. Two years ago when i maxed
out on the hytrin, and it was not as effective, proscar 5mg was added ,
i am  doing great now, prostate has shrunk, now 35 grams, Get up twice
at night to void. Have Diabetes and heart disease, so have little
interest in the risk of an invasive procedure. Very interesting that my
Urologist was pushing a procedure, not for my benefit i suspect, but for
financial gain.

Doxazosin does not shrink the prostate.  It allows the muscles to relax
in order to permit easier urination.
Finasteride (Proscar) shrinks the prostate.  Sometimes this is
successful in alleviating symptoms of bph and sometimes not.  It all
depends on how the prostate is impinging on the urinary tract, and
whether shrinking the prostate allows a more unimpeded flow. It can
take up to 9 months or longer to work.

Michael:  there have been lots of  studies to date, all involving
finasteride. Here's just a  sampling:

In 2002, a study from Innsbruck reported success and mentions finasteride
frequently, but I did not notice the name of the Alpha 1
inhibitor.[finasteride--the generic name for PROSCAR]    In 2003, the New
England Journal Of Medicine published studies from University of Texas that
also showed success compared to placebo for finasteride +  doxazosin,
[doxazosin--the generic name for CARDURA].   In 2004, Djavan, Waldert,
Ghawidel, and Marberger published their research indicating that a 5-Alpha
Reductase inhibitor was useful in reducing prostates in some men and
referenced older studies in which alpha-1 blocker was added, and was useful
in reducing reducing risk of BPH-related surgery in men at risk for the
"disease" progression.

It makes sense, too.   All the best to you.
