Greetings,

Just like to know if there are any other doctors/hospitals carrying out or
proposing to carry out PVP's.

I have already amassed an amount of positive posts for this. I need this
information for my GP.

He is listening, that is more than I can say for the Uro (Mr Almond HRI
Hull)

GP reckons if I can get enough info the PCT's may fund the op!

Peter,

Has he spoken to Mr Gordon Muir, urologist at King's? I think everyone who
has met him is impressed with Muir. The man can surely not refuse to
discuss the operation with Muir over the telephone?

Raigmore asked me to compile evidence so my uro could take it to (I think)
the hospital business manager to get my referral to King's. That seems to
be how it works. If you can convince the hospital business manager that
they will actually save money by shunting you off to London rather than
your cluttering up a ward for several days, you could yet win!

It might also be worth asking your uro to contact Mr Borgaonkar, urologist
at Raigmore, who referred me to Muir. Borgaonkar is similarly sceptical,
but he did refer me. (Probably reckoned I'd be less of a nuisance in
London!<G>).

Ask Mike Degun to send Almond the information pack. It is fairly
impressive. Mike can be contacted on mdegun@laserscope.co.uk

I really sympathise with your predicament as I have been down that road
myself.

The Uro does not want to know, I got Laserscope to mail him the info abou
the equipment and op, but he discounts it, saying that it is no better than
the old laser op.

Na, he does not want to kow, that was his final word, have the knife or do
without.

I think I will folow the GP's course, at least if I can convince the PCT's,
they would fund th op, but I would have to go private for an initial
consultation.

I may follow this course of action again, possibly send to Uro again and to
GP, who in fact has all the papers so far sent by Mr Muir.

Thanks Derek, I understand how you must have felt before you got it
approved.

There again, Mr Muir may not even consider me an acceptable candidate for
the op, we are all different and my condition has to be one that he
considers would be beneficial with the laserscope surgery, this is why I am
fighting to get at least the initial consultation, then the op to follow if
we get funding.

Peter,

That is an outside chance. If Muir can deal with a 250gram prostate with
PVP the only bar that I can envisage would be your general health. Almond
seems a bit of a nut case! (Sorry, couldn't resist!).

Is Almond the top uro at your hospital? Mine was not. Send copies of
everything to a "higher authority"? He won't like it, but it might progress
things. These people don't usually have the time for long struggles and
will give in eventually as the easier option.

I know there is a procedure to follow if you fall out with your GP and want
to change, must surely be a similar mechanism for changing consultants if
one proves as dogmatic as this guy. Is there a right to a "second opinion"?

This site may be helpful
http://www.nhs.uk/patientsvoice/how_to_complain.asp

Also, NHS Direct on 0845 4647 for advice.

If push comes to shove, I am sure Alexander Harris, solicitors, would give
brief free telephone advice on 08080774477 (a free number I think). Always
a good idea to have some ammunition!

I appreciate your naming Almond. Now others are forewarned. Professionals
are meant to be open to scientific reasoning and discussion, not on a
personal power trip. From your emails, it is clear that you are wise enough
to try gentle persuasion rather than confrontation!<G> But I'm afraid I
would just get exasperated in your situation and involve the local
Press...or walk up and down outside the hospital, with a placard, handing
out leaflets!

New to all this and this group. From what I've read here ansd
elsewhere PVP is the way forward. Does anybody know if PPP accept the
PVP as a standard procedure for insurance purposes. I understand BUPA
do.

BUPA certainly accept it and pay the bill

There should be no reason PPP will not accept it if you provide them with
same info

Gordon Muir is a NHS Consultant in a Teaching Hospital thats all that should
matter as far as PPP are concerned and in any case it will be cheaper than
TURP and 3 or 4 days in hospital

Unless you do not like open friendly and considerate Consultants I am sure
you will like Goron Muir
You can also E Mail him via www.london-urology.co.uk sure his PA Nicky can
soon tell you what PPP will do
