As antihistamines are supposedly a No, No for BPH sufferers what can one do?
I have had blotches on my arms and legs for over a year which I put down to
a side effect of either the meds I take for BP or for acid reflux. My doc
originally said that it just some thing you have to put with if you want the
actual benefits from the meds. Recently the blotches have been worse and I
itch all over. The doc has this week taken skin scrapings to test for any
fungal infections. Last week something caused my lips to swell and today I
ate a piece of Stollen and it produced quite a severe allergic reaction, the
almonds??

I don't seem to have problems with antihistamines, at least in
reasonable amounts like you would expect in two excedrin PMs.  I do have
problems with decongestants, which I avoid anyway, because of heart and
blood pressure related problems.  You might try a small amount of
antihistamine and then act accordingly.  Obviously, anyone with BPH has
to be cautious.  Good luck!

Like James I do fine with antihistamines as well.  Used Benedryl with no
problem.  And, like James, my doc did say to stay away from decongestants.

This is from BNF the book that British doctors prescribe from. I would also
be concerned as I have had two or three instances of arrhythmias recently.
Derek.
SIDE-EFFECTS
Drowsiness is a significant side-effect with most of the older
antihistamines although paradoxical stimulation may occur rarely, especially
with high doses or in children and the elderly. Drowsiness may diminish
after a few days of treatment and is considerably less of a problem with the
newer antihistamines (see also notes above). Side-effects that are more
common with the older antihistamines include headache, psychomotor
impairment, and antimuscarinic effects such as urinary retention, dry mouth,
blurred vision, and gastro-intestinal disturbances.

Other side-effects of antihistamines include palpitations and arrhythmias
(important: see especially risks associated with terfenadine, see
TERFENADINE), hypotension, hypersensitivity reactions (including
bronchospasm, angioedema, and anaphylaxis, rashes and photosensitivity
reactions), extrapyramidal effects, dizziness, confusion, depression, sleep
disturbances, tremor, convulsions, blood disorders, and liver dysfunction.
