Post PVP Urgency Feelings

I've seemingly encountered a little curve in my recovery road called
'urgency feelings.'  Days 13,14 & 15 [post PVP] were days of easily going
4-5 hours between feeling the need to void.

My research tell me when the bladder is full, nerve endings in or about the
bladder sends a 'full - it's time to go' signal to the brain. That
[currently] ain't what's happening.

Up to Day 15, the last second or so of voiding generated a definite 'you're
through peeing' message.'  The head of my penis became sensitized' during
those last couple seconds.  The 'feeling' would shortly go away.  That was
my only discomfort.

Days 16 & 17 changed somewhat. Those last two seconds have taken a new turn.
The head of my penis has taken over the job of conveying the "It's time to
pee" message.  My bladder isn't sending out any signals - cause it isn't
full.

Today, for example, I would pee - ending up with the penis head sensitized.
Within about 15 minutes, the head of my penis remained sensitized and seemed
to be generating it's own message [or equivalent] of a full bladder.  I can,
for a while ignore my penis's urgency messages - because I know they're not
real.  After a while, the path of least resistance, is to urinate.

And yet, this current curve in my recovery remains inconsistent.  At times,
the head of my penis keeps quiet [after urinating].  Other times, he's
relentless - and if I gave in to his signals, I'd be trying to pee every
thirty minutes or so.  During all this time, no signals at all from the
region of the bladder.

Is this part of the recovery process?  The head of my penis dictating when I
need to pee?  Will these feelings dissipate in time?

I'd like to take a shot at answering my own queries.  My condition worsened
considerably during the night preceding Day 19.  That was probably my worst
night since the night of the operation. I doubt I slept more than 45 minutes
at any one point. I would get up and pee.  The head of my penis would burn -
and the burning wouldn't subside.  The burning sensation caused me to feel
like 'I need to pee, cause my bladder's full - which of course, it wasn't.'
After so long, I'd give in to the cry of my penis [no question as to which
head was in charge]. I'd get up and pee - very little. Problem was: after
peeing, my penis burned all the more - which sent me another message: 'go
pee, your bladder's full.' This went on all night. I must have gotten up and
peed [some] at least 6 times.

Since it felt better being up, I spent a good portion of the night Googling
the sci.med archives and more.  I came across Dave DeBar's excellent post on
PROSED/DS. Dave simply stated PROSED/DS stopped the burning and frequency.
He sold me.  I determined by the end of this already long day to have a
bottle of PROSED in my hand [I did].

However, Dave's post also described how PROSED worked.  First off: the major
ingredient worked at reducing the acidity of the urine.  CLICK! a little
light went on - 'acidity.'  That made sense.  Take a still raw urethra and
send a stream of acidic urine through it = burning head of penis - which
generated the 'frequency' urge.

My problems of this nature started Thanksgiving Day.  Ok, what did I do
different?  I know. It was the can of cranberry sauce.  While eating nearly
the entire can, I remembered that cranberry sauce was heralded as 'good for
the bladder.'  So, I Googled cranberries and discovered 1000 mg cranberry
tablets.  You can see where I'm going. From Thanksgiving Day, I started
shoveling in cranberry products - sauce, juice and big-bore tablets - 'whole
hog.'

So, during the course of day 19 [11/29/04], I obtained a prescription for,
and purchased PROSED/DS.  I immediately stopped all intake of cranberry
products.  Stopped my 1000 mg Vit-C tablets.  I Googled acid/alkaline and
gained a crash course in how to change the acidity of my urine.

I approached the night of Day 19 with a plan:  1) Since PROSED is purported
to be fast-acting [30-60 minutes], I wouldn't take any until it looked like
the night was going to be a repeat of the previous night. I was hoping I'd
reduced the acidity of my urine enough to make a difference.

Night of Day 19:  Went to bed at 7:30 [I was tired from no sleep the night
before]. Slept 10 hours.  I woke up once during the first 8 hours. Peed,
back to bed.  No burning.  Got up at 5:30, peed - no burning.  I was amazed.
A complete reversal from the night before.  I did not take the PROSED.

1)  Thank you Dave DeBar for pointing me in the right direction;  2) Though
this experience, I'm convinced the acidity of one's urine during the PVP
recovery plays a real role.  To me, it makes good logic.  While the urethra
is still on the raw side, don't send highly acidic urine through it.

Of course, I'm only one night and one day on my 'lowering the acidity of my
urine' campaign, but it's been my best burn/frequency night and day in quite
a while.

Should my theory prove unfounded, I'll post to that effect.  But, I'm
thinking that won't be necessary.

Fascinating.
I had some nights and days like that after my recent TURP.  I'm at about 10
weeks now and I still won't drink anything besides herbal tea and water.
Oh, just a comment.  I was told that slightly acid urine is good.  It
decreases the chance of getting a urinary tract infection.

Phil, you're right about 'acidic urine' making life more difficult for
bacteria in the bladder.  However, I will currently happily forego that
possible benefit.
