I had a PVP in July of 1993. I thought I was all over it. Yesterday I
helped my girl friend move into her new town house. I ended up carrying
heavy Japanese teak furniture up three flights of stairs. The next I passed
a big clot followed by a lot of deep red urine. The next urination was pink
and the subsequent were normal. I called doctor Lin, my urologist, and left
a message telling what happened. I thought I would be able to lift what
ever I wanted to that long after surgery. I'm 65 and had a very big
prostate. Maybe 65 is too old to be carrying big loads up steps. My legs
and back are OK but the blood frightened me.

I already got a call back from Dr. Lin's office. They tell me that he is on
vacation but will give me a call when he gets back on Monday. I hope it was
just a one time thing caused by lifting furniture that weighs much more then
I do. I would not like to have anything shoved into me unless it is
absolutely needed.

You are a pretty strong guy-did you life properly with your knees etc...and

I'm not as strong as I thought I was. I'm an active hiker and routinely
climb high mountains with a 35 to 45 pound back pack. My legs are very
strong but apparently that that does not qualify me as a furniture mover.
I'm tall and lean. I think people that move heavy furniture should be built
like fire plugs, I'm not. I did lift with my legs. My back, body and arms
never hurt me. I just peed blood the next day.

Dave,
You obviously injured yourself. If the bleeding has stopped you are
probably okay now. But realize that even though you might be peeing like a
20 year old your no longer 20. Picking up heavy furniture is not a good
idea regardless when you had a PVP, if ever. Take it easy on yourself.

Did you really have the PVP in July 1993 or was it July 2003? Thanks.

I should have said July 2003. That blood must have leaked from my brain.

The problem with performing heavy exercise after 35+ is that many people
have partially occluded coronary arteries. If the heart doesn't get enough
blood, you have a heart attack. This doesn't happen with the young. Their
coronary arteries aren't clogged with plaque so the heart gets all the blood
it needs since the heart has first call on blood needs. Not to mention
hernias and herniated discs.

Dave,
Sorry to hear of your problem. Remember old age and treachery
will out last youth and exurberance everytime. But that does not cover
a 65 year old dude carring teak furniture up three flights of stairs.
Suggest you get some place without stairs--lighter furniture-- a new
girlfirend or any or all of these items.
The old story comes to mine of a old bull with two young bulls
standing on a hill looking down on a herd of cows. One young bull said
to the other lets run down there and nail one of them cows. The old
bull said go ahead I,ll walk down and get them all.
See you doctor in case you messed something up lifting.

Thanks for the laugh Terrmac. You made me laugh so hard at myself that I
got tears in my eyes.
I'm still bewildered why anyone 60 years old would sell a rambler and buy a
three story town house. She is a remarkably powerful, solidly built woman.
When I told her this place needs an elevator, she replied this will get us
in shape for climbing the mountains in Peru next spring. I just decided
that I'm going to hire a sherpa to carry my backpack next time. Or maybe
I'll let my girlfriend carry my gear as will as hers.

that is a pretty old clot. how big was your prostate (mine was 105 [dr
laub, feb 2003])? is your flow better after the clot departed? keep us
posted after you hear from dr lin.

Frank,
I'm OK now. The bleeding was a one time thing. Also I should mention that
I took two Advil pills after the heavy lifting to prevent sourness the next
day. Advil is a blood thinner and could have contributed to the bleeding.
I'm still waiting for Dr. Lin to call me back and I'll report what he says.
I was told by Dr. Nseyo that my prostate was in excess off 150 grams. He
told me that their equipment can only measure prostates up to 150 grams. He
went on to tell me that mine was the largest prostate that he has ever seen!
I still consider the operation done by Dr. Lin, a total success. While I
had retro for a while, I recently discovered that symptom has reverted back
to normal operation.

I recently had a similar thing happen to me. I had PVP 18 months ago.
A few weeks ago I felt soreness in my prostate for almost a week, then
had bloody urine. I went to my urologist (not the one who did my PVP)
and he looked in my bladder and saw raw skin and irritation near the
bladder neck. He said he had seen that in people who have had PVP.
Scar tissue can rupture or the lining of the prostate can be irritated
even 18 months after PVP.
I passed clots for about 5 days, then it stopped. I have no symptoms
now.
However, blood in the urine should always be checked out to rule out
other possibly serious conditions.

I just got a call back from Dr. Lin. He said that if you lifted something
very heavy that bleeding can happen. I should not be concerned if it only
happened once and stopped. He said, "If it happens again, call me. In the
meantime you should have your PSA measured.
He asked about my stream size and retro. I told him that my retro just
cleared up and now works normally. I told him that I have noticed that my
stream size gets smaller if I refain from sex for a week. He said that this
is because of "congestion" in the gland and I should not let it build up.
He still remembered me, and told me that a someone on this NG that I refered
to him came to him and is also doing well now.
