Hello to all.

I'm 57 years old. Had prostatitis since my 30s and BPH through my 50s. Its
been eight days since my TURP and healing is going well,  Flow is excellent
but frequency varies.  Uro tells me this is normal.  Not a lot of pain
associated with the surgery.  The only pain relief I take is Tylenol.
Recovery will take another week or two.  Getting bored staying home.
Will be glad to answer any questions about the recovery unless you have
heard enough already.

Wishing good health to all.

Thanks for your post.  This newsgroup does not get many TURP posters.

A couple questions.  What prompted you to choose TURP?  Your uro?  Your own
research?  Any reasons for not choosing other treatment options?

How long were you in the hospital?  How long with a cath?  What did your doc
say about recovery time?  Limitations during recvovery?  Off work?

Best wishes for your recovery.

Dennis

Hi Dennis and Group.

My readings suggested that a TURP would be more effective than other
treatments.  My brother who is a nurse and other nurse friends told me that
from their experience the best outcomes seemed to be with doctors who did
TURPS and had lots of experience with the procedure.  My URO has done this
procedure 2500 times and I trusted him to do a good job  (based on
references and other contacts).

I was in the hospital for a little over 48 hours.  My surgery was at 7:30 AM
and I left two days later shortly after noon.
I did as well as could be expected. I have heard that others stay longer.

The catheter was removed before I left the hospital  (a painless procedure).
After catheter removal I was able to urinate freely for the first time in
many, many years.  There was little if any pain.

If I feel any pain, I take Tylenol.  There is some, but not much.  There is
some discomfort (gas), but that seems to be subsiding as the days go by.

Recovery time is about two to three weeks.   I will take all three weeks and
maybe a little more. Some may need more time before going back to work if
they do heavy lifting.  I see the doctor in 6 weeks at which time I hope to
be pretty much back to normal.

Limitations during recovery include no lifting, pulling or straining during
bowel movements.

Still, wishing good health to all,

Phil

Were you told that TURP was better than PVP because my experience of PVP was
a delight ......i was sitting in my own garden 6 hours after it and no
catheter at all

How did the procedure impact you prostatitis (assuming you still had it at time
of surgery - did you?)

James,

Yes, I did have prostatitis at the time of surgery, or a least I think I
did.  Currently, I am not able to distinguish normal post-operative
discomfort from what I might experience with prostatitis, so I don't know.
Perhaps in a month ot two I will be able to answer that question.

Take care,

Phil

OK.  It's been about 15 days since my TURP.  If I drink a lot of water
during the day I feel little discomfort.  The biggest problem is eating high
fiber foods and keeping my hemmorhiods under control.  I am stronger and can
walk more than a 100 yards or so without a problem.  I seem to have no
frequency during the day but still some at night.  I've been told that
recovery may take a month or longer, but that I should notice a definte
improvement after 4 weeks. So I have a little less than two weeks to go.  So
far, so good.  The flow is excellent.

Wishing good health to all.

We haven't heard nearly enough yet, it would be great if you could post
as often as weekly and tell us how you're coming along.  I think most
here are interested in the recovery process and the final results.

TIA
