My Dr. has suggested that I use Uroxatral (alfuzosin HCl) for my BPH. He
indicates it is a new drug that improves the flow but does not have the side
effects of Flomax.
Does anyone know anything about it, good or bad?

I was placed on Uroxatral May 28 after a near urinary retention crises
set off by an ENT doc using Afrin nose spray during an examination.
Have been on it continuously since May 28 even though I had a TUMT
procedure on July 2. Uro says that I can try getting off it anytime and
see what the results of the TUMT were. I have not had any side effects
of which I have been aware. The Uroxatral did significantly ease the
bladder retention apparently set off by Afrin nose spray. Had
septoplasty July 21. I am a 60 yr old male who had moderate bph prior
to the urinary crises. Apparently it is an alpha blocker that relaxes
the bladder/prostate allowing better urinary flow.

Thanks,
I have looked at the Patient Info and listed side effects. It appears to
have less than Flomax.
I have tried Flomax and did not like the side effects.
Guess I will try the Uroxatral for a while and see.

I had been taking Cardura and my doctor switched me to it. Didn't make much
of a difference. I went back to Cardura at a higher dosage. That helped.

I tried both Uroxatral and Flomax. Though neither worked, I had no side
effects from Uroxatral and the typical Flomax side-effects (reduced
ejaculate, slight nasal congestion.)

Yep...I have tried both. XATROL, for ME, was BETTER than FLOMAX. Xatrol
did not cause retro-ejaculation whereas FLOMAX did. So, naturally all else
being equal, and they are, Xatrol offered more enjoyment during intimacy.
Yet, I am still trying to cope with the negatives from BOTH Flomax AND
Xatrol: dizziness, drain of internal energy, ...it's a real chore to run,
workout, lift weights, and pedal my bike..stuffy nose, etc. I also read
somewhere that we have to be careful about the added strain on the heart
with these types of medications--blood pressure lowering and the body may be
stressed trying to cope. I have to mentally psych up big time to work out
compared to very high natural motivations before starting either of the
meds. But they both work re: urine flow. BIGGEST difference, as I
mentioned, FLOMAX caused (for me) retro-ejaculation. So, I purposely asked
my doctor to keep me on Xatrol until all my blood tests are in and we find
the cause of my BPH and able to treat the cause and not just the symptoms.
Best of luck to you.
