I read the recent thread on Avodart.
I am 72, have BPH, am now getting up 6-7 times during the night, ruining my sleep.
My regular doctor (internal medicine) gave me enough samples for 5 weeks. He
mentioned it takes about this time for any effect.
I am at the point of deciding to fill my perscription. At 5 weeks, I notice no
effects, no change. I realize people are different, and it may be too soon for
judgement.
Any commments about how long it may take to see some effect, and side effects that
show up?
No disrespect intended, but I am very surprised by what your doctor told
you. (I am NOT a doctor or a medical scientist, but have been reading
widely about BPH ever since I was diagnosed.) In many cases Avodart and
Finasteride (both inhibit DHT) take a long time to work...6, 8 MONTHS,
sometimes more than a year--you may react better/faster?? Even GPs know
that, or they ought to. If you are getting up 6 to 7 times a night why in
the world didn't your doctor also prescribe alpha blockers such as
UROXATROL, FLOMAX, CARDURA OR HYTRIN which relax the urinary tract and allow
emptying of the bladder? You may want to ask him both questions, one more
time. Best of luck to you.

Thanks for the info. I filled my perscription- that is spendy.
My GP did, several years ago, give me Flomax samples. While I noticed NO effects,
I looked it up and the potential side effects cancelled my interest in it.
