Does anyone have any sources you can direct me to that discusses the causes
of high DHT...other than simply "aging"? I got my blood work back today
and DHT was right through the roof, all other indicators were good. My
urologist could not explain the CAUSE of high DHT...I suggested we tackle
the cause, not just the symptoms. He had no idea. Anyone out there able to
provide any information as to causes? Thanks in advance.

What is DHT?

DHT is what makes prostates grow...then people seek medication to shrink the
prostate...until eventually, the medications don't shrink it any more, or
the side effects such as "bitch tits", (gynomaestia), or impotence, are no
longer tolerable. At that point surgical intervention is required to cut
the prostate back down to size so we mid-lifers can have a wiz again. DHT =
dihydrotestosterone. It is commonly known to have "something" do to with
testosterone conversion but no one seems to be able to identify the
bio-mechanisms that actually create DHT.. I'd like to find out what is out
of whack and go after the causes of DHT rather than the risks associated
with "managing" the symptoms of it...

I seem to remember that when I took Proscar, I developed them to the
point where the Man-Bra seemed like a good idea. I was actually
lactating (or so it seemed).

John: thank you...Your suggestion was very helpful. I'll check out the
book, but in scanning the index on line I was able to learn from that and
other sources that Testosterone + 5-Alpha-Reductase = DHT. Finasteride
("PROSCAR") and Dutasteride ("AVODART") are widely used to reduce
5-Alpha-Reductase. I'll keep hunting for why the body suddenly produces
more 5-Alpha-Reductase. Thanks.

I hope you have some success in finding the cause(s). It has always
impressed me that the medical profession--or at least those whom
patients encounter--has so little or no interest in the causes of
ailments. One would think that it is most important to locate and
understand the causes, not merely to treat the symptoms. I suppose the
causes are left to the researchers.

Thanks for your encouragement. I plan to keep at it. My doctor and I are
now seeking out an endocrinologist to help answer the question....He is
curious and wants to know, too.
