This is CRITICALLY important. If you are contemplating PVP surgery,
you should make sure your urologist is using the "Green Light" laser
from LASERSCOPE. This laser is properly calibrated to achieve the
best results (currently) from laser surgery. There are other lasers
out there, and they never became a mainstream form of prostate surgery
because of mixed results. Don't let your doctor sell you a bill of
goods based on out-dated equipment he has purchased or for which he
has training.

This is so true. I had my PVP in January. I am quite pleased with the
results although it took a couple months for me to get over the surgery. I
had some real urgency and bladder spasms plus I was plagued with UTIs. I
agree that the green light is the one to go with. The others can burn you
even with a good surgeon. I had no bleeding what so ever. It is however more
traumatic than The Laserscope website or brochures would lead you to
believe.
Stay as far away from the TUMT procedure as you can. I had it in 96 and had
severe problems, now a matter of record.

Burr, glad things are OK. What were your symptoms before PVP and how
bad were the bladder spasms. Did you have these before PVP? How long
did they go on for after the op and did you take medication for them.
Why does your Uro think you got UTIs.

Before PVP I was catheterized. Stream was down to zero. The spasms were bad
enough to cause leakage. I tried Detrol but found it intolerable. Why did my
Uro think I had UTIs is an odd question. They are easy to diagnose with
urine testing. Mine were not diagnosed by the operating URO but in the ER by
lab test. Both preliminary testing and culturing.

Thanks Burr, I meant how & why did you get the UTI's was it a result
of the PVP or did you pick them up in the ER?
Interesting you say that you couldn't tolerate Detrol, in another post
2004-03-17 you said it was the greatest thing since sliced bread. Did
it work for a while and then stop or couldn't you tolerate the side
effects after a while?

The detrol does reduce the bladder spasms. That is what it is supposed to
do. However it is difficult to find a medicine that effects only one organ.
I got a very dry throat and mouth from it. This is bad for me since I sleep
with a CPAP and also have Sjogrens. The spasms and urgency went away within
a couple months for me leaving me with quite normal urinary functions. The
Detrol does do what it is meant for in most cases. Studies show that about 5
percent stop it for one reson or another. I believe that for side effects of
PVP one should not have to use it forever and in my opinion it is better not
to take any chemical you can get along without. In my case I was never more
than 10 feet from the bathroom. Also, as it turned out, my problems were due
more from Urinary tract infections than from mechanical bladder problems.
The UTIs would keep getting worse until I was completely plugged. I am sorry
that I did not go into all of the details in earlier posts. You seem to be
keeping detailed records. Do you have any interesting statistics built up?
Please share.
Respectfully
Burr

No detailed records, did a search (can't remember what for now) and
the two posts happened to come up next to each other!
Kind Regards, Magna
