still can't self-cath

It's been awhile since I've reported in. I'm the guy who can't
self-catheterize himself. I saw my uro for a final effort at self-cath
last week, and neither of us could thread the catheter into the
bladder. I asked him why he can so easily thread the larger permanent
catheter into the bladder so easily, but he says he doesn't know. His
only explanation why I can't self-cath myself is that I have "a long
urethra." His words, not mine. So, I plan to get some second opinions.
I'm worried because my research on the Net says that guys with
permanent catheters have a higher incidence of morbidity than others.
Also, I've been getting infected with monotonous regularity for a
year-and-a-half now, and I'm already drug resistant to Cipro and
Levaquin. Drug resistance itself could also very well kill me early.
Does anyone know of anyone with a permanent catheter who has lived
with it 20 years or so? It would be reassuring to hear of someone who
has. Any comments or suggestions re my present predicament are
welcome. Thanks, guys.         Dave

Hopefully, you will get a 2nd opinion SOON. Keep us posted. I would
like to know and do care.

Hi Dave,
Like Zork I,ve been wondering how you,ve been getting on with your problem,
If like you say your uro can insert the indwelling catheter easily but not
the self
cath , it seems like he should be able to give you a definitive reason why
not
and if you do in fact have a long urethra that surely is not an unique
condition
and there must be catheters manufactured for men with that problem.
Like all the other replies to your message I would urge you to find a more
helpful
uro and at least get a second or more opinions.
Like you when I was using the indwelling catheter I was forever on
antibiotics to
clear up infections so I can understand your concern about the effectiveness
of
them long term so hopefully you can get some positive advice from another
uro
and be able to self cath soon,
best of luck

If you haven't tried a caudette tip - I know this is spelled wrong -
it's worth a try.  It's a curved tip made for males to get through the
prostate maze without getting stuck.  Follow instructions to line the
tip up correctly before insertion.  Comes in all sizes, try a # 14, go
slow do not force, let it go in gradually, you will know when it slides
into the opening.  If you can't find another uro, find a good nurse with
some experience.

We tried the curved tip self catheter, and we couldn't thread it in,
either. I'm at a dead end, unless some other uro can recommend
something else for me. I'll start getting second opinions soon. I
guess a supra pubic permanent, indwelling catheter would be better
than the urethral catheter, no? At least my penis would be free of
this damn tube. I'd like to hear from anyone with any opinions on the
matter. Thanks again, guys.
