A quick note of encouragement for those of you who have had a PVP.

Had PVP over a year ago.  Urologist told me it would take a good 6-8
months before I healed and things returned to normal.  At 8 months I
felt like things were normal, but I was wrong.  Improvement continued
up to the 1 year mark.  I think things have stablized now.
Regardless, I've been very satisfied with the results from day 1.

My operation was very smooth...no catheter, no pain, and immediate
improvement in flow.  Like most, the urgency during the first 3 months
was greater than I had experienced before...particularly when standing
up after sitting for awhile.  This gradually improved over time.  I
would occasionally get up at night through the first 8 months or so.
After a year, I don't get up at all.  What a difference.  And the
frequency has gone from once every 2 hours to once every 4 hours or
so.

For me, retrograde has been on and off.  The first 3 months, no retro.
Then I had retro.  But lately, it appears that it's started to
reverse itself.  Sometime things work like they're supposed to.  Can't
figure that one out.  Doesn't really matter.  I'd trade being able to
pee for retro anytime.  That's a no brainer.  An ejaculation may not
feel the same, but it still feels good.

I've told my uro that I'm not concerned if BPH returns. I'd simply
have another PVP.  He indicated that he doubts it will return.  He's
had a lot of success with PVPs.  He no longer recommends other
treatments except in unusual cases.  I think that says a lot about the
treatment.

I hope this encourages those of you who have not experienced the
immediate results you hoped for.  As others have said, it takes time
to heal and for the swelling to go done.  It should get better for
you. Be patient.

Great news!  Can you estimate the new useable capacity of your bladder and
how much it has improved? Thanks, Jim W.

Gradually increased from 250 to 350 over several months.  Had to force
myself to wait over this time period until I was too uncomfortable to
hold it any longer.  At end of the year it was topping out at about
400.  Haven't measured since then...it just doesn't concern me
anymore.  Now, I'm only concerned that I empty my bladder fully, which
I'm able to do except on some days when I get up in the morning.  In
those situations, I'll usually go before taking a shower and then
produce a small amount after the shower.

That's a wonderful improvement.  Do you think the training was necessary to
improve capacity or did it simply accelerate it? Thanks, Jim W.

Jim,

Others in the newsgroup had written that it was helpful to "retrain"
the bladder.  After living it, I believe this to be true; however, it
did get uncomfortable at times. I recall three weeks after the surgery
taking a baseball team I coached to a road game.  An hour trip to the
game, about 4 hours at the ballpark, and then an hour bus ride back.
No restrooms at the park.  Quite uncomfortable from about the 5th
inning on.  Had the driver stop about 45 minutes into the return trip
at a rest stop.  Peed like a clydesdale.  Going nearly 6 hours without
hitting a urinal was something I hadn't experienced for years. But it
showed me just how much more my bladder could hold.

Hope this helps.

Your results are terrific.  Congratulations to you.  Can you tell us
who your urologist was?  Where is he located?

Thanks

Have a KTP laser procedure scheduled with Dr McCoy Feb 23.  Would be
interested in any information you would be willing to share that might
reduce my anxiety.  Please reply direct to chockman@canby.com

Just what kind of improvement did you experience between the 8th month and
12 th month?
I am 6 months past PVP and still need improvement in the bladder area.
Thanks for a reply for I would like to know what to expect from now to up
to a year. I still have some frequency and urgency. Dean,
