How old is your urologist?

Many of you have visited urologists who were either unaware of or
pooh-poohed PVP.  I wonder how many of these doctors were middle-aged (let's
call that 45) or older?  Were they unaware of PVP because they were
satisfied with whatever procedure they were comfortable with and didn't keep
up with their profession?  Did they not want to evaluate another procedure
due to resistance to change or the cost of upgrading equipment?  One has to
wonder.

I just saw a very young (35) doctor who has already done 80-100 PVPs.  He
even referred to a TURP using the roto-rooter analogy during our discussion.
I think doctors are a conservative bunch in general.  I suppose if I had
been doing  something the same way for 20-30 years and knew it was referred
to as the "gold standard" I might be reluctant to change also.  It will be
interesting to see if what appears to be superior technology can unseat the
established practice and if so, how long it will take.

You could do some research into the history of anaesthesia for a
parallel. Things have, of course, moved on but if our Queen
Victoria had not insisted on the use of Chloroform during labour
against all the advice of the medical profession, the clergy,
the politicians, etc. I wonder where we would be today?

Today, we have the Internet and this newsgroup. As has been
stated here before, the change from TURP to PVP will come about
in response to patient demand. Keep posting! It was a lazy man
who invented the wheel<G>.

I was just recently to see a urologist, I would guess about 55 years old.
He does BOTH PVP and TURP. I was quite surprised that he prefers TURP.  Says
he usually only uses PVP on people who are very sick and blood loss might be
a problem.

It would be interesting to know what the urologist's reasoning was.

The uro who was urging me to use microwave was in his early 40's and the uro
who did my PVP was late 50's. He is one of only two in Colorado who is using
the Laserscope technology.

I'm new here, folks...and trying to lurk.

Can you tell me briefly about PVP?...and TURP?...and which one is
Laser?

I'm currently experimenting with Saw Palmetto...and not happy with the
funny feeling I get when taking them (2 tablets).

Have a nice week...

Start reading some of the old threads or do a Google search on PVP or visit
any medical site and look under BPH.  PVP is laser treatment in which the
laser vaporizes the prostate tissue.  Read all about it at
www.laserscope.com.   TURP is the standard "roto-rooter" approach which
involves cutting out the prostate tissue.

I've never read about anyone experiencing funny feelings from saw palmetto
but it doesn't work for a lot of people.

I have seen four registrars in the urology department of our large
regional hospital
here in England.  All are in their twenties or early thirties, most
probably direct from
medical school.  As far as I can tell not one of them was aware of recent
laser
treatments and some condemned all laser treatments as ineffective.   So I
suspect it's
more to do with attitude, training and culture than age.
