John, I have to cath myself 4 times a day to maintain no more than
350ml or 10 to 12 oz. I have been doing this for 3 months. I have an
appointment with a URO in Arlington,TX Aug. 1 for PVP Laserscope. My
kidney Dr. friend say's that you can cath yourself until the cows come
home(his words). I have no problem at all. I was shown by a nurse in
my local URO's Office. I have acute urinary retention caused by
enlarged prostate. I am taking Avodart, and Flomax. I dont know the
size of my catheter( it is 16 inches long). Ralph

In Victorian London, gentlemen used to keep their catheters wound round the
inside of their top hats. Not very sterile and most did not last very long
in those days.

In like manner, I have read that the Americans cowboys of the old west who
spent so much time bouncing in their saddles often suffered prostate
problems and would keep a reed in their hat to cath themselves.  A shoot-out
at high noon is nothing compared to the courage one would need to muster
prior to shoving a reed up ones penis.

I've read that Benjamin Franklin used to do it too.
Last may I was inserted a Foley catheter after PVP and the pain was minor.
Maybe a man can get used to self-catheratization if BPH is bad enough -  a
hell of a trade-off.
