I find some of the postings on this NG referring to TURP to be very
different from my experience.
My procedure lasted only 45 minutes which I followed myself on a TV
screen. I found it to be quite painless although a touch
uncomfortable at times. Bleeding was very small - amounting to no
more than a discolouration of the urine. The results were all that I
coould hope for - zero retention and, as the saying goes "I can pee
the paint off the barn wall".
Some of the advantages of this procedure are ;
1 That I don't have to have a separate surgical procedure to obtain
tissue samples for biopsy.
2 I don't have to worry that, in 5 /10 years time, I develop cancer
triggered by the high intensity electro-magnetic radiation of laser
treatments.
3 The use of a catheter after the operation ensures that the detritus
has all been flushed out of my system.
In short, TURP has been a brilliant operation for me. However,
everyone is different and the only recommendation which I would make
is consult your physician. And if you don't trust your physician then
get one you do trust !

I also had a TURP in 1995,although I had a few problems with excessive
bleeding etc.The operation has been a success, and although I still have to
get up about three times a night to urinate,I have learned to live with
it,and am taking medication to keep it in control. As long as it remains
stable I shall not worry.
