We had a shoot scheduled for today and I had arranged to
delegate organization to a friend. Yesterday, I put my feet up
by the fire and had a day off after the fiasco with the bogged
Land Rover and trailer.

But this morning, I decided I had better show my face as these
are new shooters and I had not met them. Of course, when I got
to the meet at 9.30am, I decided I felt fit enough to walk
around with them until lunch time. Then at lunch time, I felt
good enough to go on to finish the day at 3.30pm. It was a very
enjoyable day, too, with occasional showers and a stiff wind.

A couple of days ago I had a chat with the farmer. Two years ago
he had a heart by-pass so the conversation turned to our
respective operations. I was interested to hear that he also
had made a quick recovery and was back at work within a short
time. He went on to lamb 700 ewes as usual six months later
(and that is hard work and looong days!}.

Sorry, lads, but it seems we are a lot tougher up here in
the hills than you guys down in the cities and on the flat
lands. Or maybe the whiskey has something to do with it?<G>

It's the Highland air that does it Derry. All my Ross and MacLean ancestors
from Sutherland lived to a great age. Each generation of descendants who
moved to the South live to a lesser age despite medical advances.

No. It is a ruse to create an argument with a Scot. The dispute
can only be resolved by buying a bottle and having a look at the
label. There is then the problem of disposing of what we have
bought in an ecologically friendly way.

I forgot to mention, in the previous story the neighbour with
the heart by-pass is a Yorkshireman!<VBG>

I have dual nationality. UK and Irish.
Anyway, at that stage of the evening, I am beyond spelling!<G>

BTW, the island malts are also spelt with an "e". But then you
knew that.

No, I didn't know that but then I can't afford them:-) But all the Island
web sites seem to disagree with you.

Are you saying no Scottish malt whiskies are spelt with an "e"?,
i.e. as in malt whiskey? Or just Islay?

I have always been told that "whisky" is Scottish and "whiskey" is Irish.
The Islay site and another I looked at seemed to confirm that but an enquiry
on Jeeves suggests otherwise. Tomorrow I will have to do a market survey:-)

One of the island malts spells it's whisky on the label with an
"e". I can't recall which one off hand. I did hope to back you
into a bet but like a true Scot, I see you will not be
pushed!<G>

The point of spelling the word without an "e" was, as I
understand it, a marketting ploy to distinguish Scotch from
Irish. But not all the Scottish distilleries followed the
convention.

I lived within sight of John Smith's The Glenlivet distillery
for 7 years and was on Speyside for around 10 years. In that
area, malts are the standard drink of most for the very
practical reason that they don't contain the poisonous alcohols
in the blends and so leave no hang over!

The last Englishman (an ex Chelsea player) who pushed me in a bet regretted
it after Scotland punished the World Cup Holders at Wembley in 1967. He even
gave me a one goal start and odds of 2/1.

You'd beat me there. I know nothing about cricket!<VBG>
