I will be seeing a PVP uro on 1/5.
In preparation, I've gathered some PSA data from my last 8 physicals. I've
always been reassured by these results. I still think they are good, but
they sure are increasing. However, I am 57 years old now, so I am assuming
that an increasing PSA just goes with the territory. But I also have another
thought: doesn't that also help indicate (or maybe correlate with) my
slowly increasing BPH symptoms??
Anyway, here are the results and I'd be curious what others thought (my
thought: this is typical -- but, is it?):
6/95 1.2
10/96 1.3
10/97 1.5
10/98 1.6
10/99 1.7
10/00 2.0
11/01 2.1
2/03 2.0

My PSA has ranged from 1.4 to 1.7 between 1996 and 2002. Will get the next
test next month. I'm 55. 1996 was about when I first started noticing BPH
symptoms.

Mel,
Assuming that you have BPH only, the slowly rising PSA shows a prostate that
is enlarging and getting more inflammed year after year. I have results
like this from 1993 until 2002. Slowly rising PSA year after year with ever
increase symptoms.

My PSA has never been below 4 and got as high as 17 prior to having a
TURP in 1998. It dropped back to 4 after the TURP and has remained
there since.

Can anyone tell me how often I should have a PSA test AFTER having had a
successful PVP?

Chris:
My GUESS is you would still do it once a year. You would probably need to
establish a new baseline and then go from there as prostate cancer is still
a threat and that's the major purpose of PSA testing (to screen for it).
I understand there might be a better test soon.

I think so--but M.D. I'm not. You are wise in main-
taining your own history.
My Uro and PCM (same HMO) consider trend as well
as absolute value. They order a followup PSA
when the upward shift exceeds 30% in one year
or the total PSA is above 2.5 (for white males.)
I think this is quite conservative (their 2002 ceiling
was 4.0).
