I have had BPH symptoms on and off for 10 years or so. In recent years I've
been on Hytrin and later on flomax and they have worked wonders.
It has also bought me more time. After perusing this group for years, I am
convinced that if indeed I do have BPH and I need some action taken, PVP is
the way to go. But I've been stalling, waiting for PVP to come to Michigan.
(There is a doc who does them and he may be great but the one report of one
of his patients was pretty bad).
Well, in recent months, the situation has worsened. Much more difficulty
urinating and then a lot of pain/discomfort. That started in early
September, cleared up in 2 weeks, and now has occurred again for the last 2
1/2 weeks.
I finally saw my GP today. I am sure it feels like a urinary track infection
and/or prostatitis. However, urine tests (as before) continue to be
negative. He did a DRE and that is very normal (if it is prostatitis he says
I would go through the roof upon such an examination), although he does say
it feels like my prostate is quite large (and he feels it has gotten larger
over the years).
He did give me zithromax as that does have some coverage and we will see if
a short course of that has any effect. His best guess, however, is that I am
having pain and inflammation due to the BPH. In short, I'm probably not
quite totally emptying and that is causing some irritation. But, who
knows!!!
Meanwhile, the only good thing that has happened is that U. of Mich. has now
gone on the laserscope bandwagon (I was hoping for that --- they are a very
good, prestigous medical center, so that's a good sign). I'm seeing their
PVP uro guy on 1/5, so that should start the ball rolling anyway.
I assume he would do a cystoscope and that would give me some information
and hopefully confirm that I do have BPH.(or something else fixable).
Any comments/suggestions?? I know this guy is new at this as his name only
appeared on Laserscope's cite 2-3 weeks ago. But, hopefully by the time I
get it done, he will have done quite a few.

The symptoms you quote are typical of this form of BPH
Definitely go for PVP as much less risk of damage and such an incredible
recovery time you will need to remind yourself that you did actually have a
major operation

Once you decide on PVP, you should seek out the best doctor for the
procedure. I would want one that did at least 25 operations. If this
means traveling, then by all means, do so. I went 1800 miles for my
PVP. It's very doable because you are able to travel a few days
afterwards.

Barry:
Yes, if this is still BPH and not something else, I hope my situation is
appropriate for the PVP.
As I said, my appointment is set for 1/5. The doctor is listed on the
Laserscope site. So, my understanding is that this means he has done at
least 10 such surgeries.
I assume by the time I see him and go through all the tests, he will have
performed a lot more than 10. I also would like to see at least 25. I
understand there is a waiting list for PVP, so hopefully he will have that
experience!
