6th Day post-op

Last Friday, July 10th, I had my TURP plus laser procedure. My main
discomfort, and it was pretty bad, was the constipation I developed and did
not get relieved itself until the end of the 4th day. I never had to take
any of the Percoset the doctor prescribed for me, so I guess the anesthesia
was the cause of the constipation.

I never had a problem like that before, and reading of other guys'
constipation for way more than that was not very comforting either. The
doctor told me to avoid straining under all circumstances and prescribed
Colase to soften the stools up. Once it passed, (with the help of a laxative
I asked the doc if I could take), I had one less thing to worry about,
because subsequent BM's were no problem, but the leader of the pack was a
real "hard head"!  I can make fun of it now, but I was **really** scared of
having to go to the emergency room to do whatever to clear it out. I have
not had any real bleeding since being discharged from the hospital, but did
have a few drops in the first day or 2.

The doc has me on Pyridium which supposed to ease the stinging, which I
don't really have except maybe only a twinge once in a while, and that's not
in the area where the surgery was done, but is at the tip of my tool where
the catheter entered. The Pyridium sure turned my urine orange, anyway. He
gave me enough of that for 5 days and Cipro for about 2 weeks, plus the
Colase for 30 days with 3 refills.

Anyway, so far, my frequency and urgency seems no better than it was before
surgery. I have actually been getting up during the night more post surgery
than I was before. My urine flow is much better than it was, for sure.
Although I was not fully emptying my bladder before surgery, I never really
thought that I had difficulty peeing. The flow was never powerful, but I was
having to go very often and urgently when I did.

I guess I need to give it more time. I have a follow up visit with my Uro on
the 27th and will see what he has to say. My bladder may be so toughened
from not being able to empty out all these years, that I have not much
ability to hold much urine in it.  When I fist consulted this Uro and asked
him if I could take a bladder relaxer like Vesicare, he said that until he
scoped me, gave me the flow test and sonogram for post voiding urine
retention, that was totally out of the question because urethra' restriction
from the BPH would not allow the bladder to empty at all if it were under
the influence of a drug for over active bladder. Well, I did "fail" all the
tests, and he said I needed to have the surgery.

Any words of encouragement from you gentlemen that may have gone through all
this already?

Thanks,

Bob

Is only 6 days since the op! Early days....

I always had constipation after a general anaesthetic.
And short-term pain at the penis tip is par for the course after a catheter.

Give it another 10 days. You will feel a different man!

It is now 7 weeks post op of my TURP plus laser procedure. The bleeding
finally stopped completely after the 3rd week or so, but my symptoms I had
the surgery done to correct are no better than pre surgery. Frequency is
some days several times an hour during the day, and when I have to go, I
REALLY have to go NOW! The doctor said to allow at least 3 months to see any
improvement. I have another visit with him for the uroflow and PVR tests Mid
October. Getting up at night is about every 2 and a half hours or so, which
is almost the same as before. he still has me on Flomax and Proscar at least
until my next visit. The flow is great now, and that is the only improvement
I have seen.
Some of you that have had these procedures have mentioned relief of these
symptoms very early after surgery if I remember correclty?

Thanks for the report. I'm surprised that he still has you on Flomax
and Proscar. I thought both would be stopped once you had a TURP.

When did he say 3 months to see improvement? Did he say that before
the surgery? If so, then there must have been reasons, and you really
should wait 3 months. And I suppose he must have told you the reasons.

Hi Ed,

When I went for my 2 week post op follow up visit, and I told him how often
I have to go now, that's when he said I need to give it 3 months to see
improvement. He said my bladder needs to (not his words exactly) needs to
relearn its situation. He said from the very, very beginning though when we
first discussed doing surgery, that there are no guarantees, but doing the
surgery "should" make my life much easier, as the drugs have seemed to lost
their ability to offer me much relief anymore.
He told me right after surgery, that he wanted me to keep taking those 2
drugs for another 90 days, and then told me again on the follow up visit. He
did not really give me  the reason,  at least I don't remember it, and I
guess when I was at his office, I just accepted that and did not ask why.
Getting up several times during the night is something I have had to do for
many years, and so has always been having to be aware of where the nearest
men's room was, but post op, that knowing where is much more critical than
ever. Pissed myself once so far, but luckily it was in my own yard. Just
waited too long, and never made it into the house. Now I find myself
probably going to the bathroom at the slightest feeling of having to go.
Probably not the best thing to do either. I still do my best to enjoy life
and get around this problem! There are people with much worse problems, and
would laugh at mine, being very willing to trade problems with me.

Good for you, you have a positive outlook. But at the right time you
might want to ask yuor uro what is up, and if further improvements are
possible.
