Anyway, back when I was in my mod 40's, I started having to pee a lot and
had the symptoms of BPH. I went to a urologist and he diagnosed me with BPH.
He put me on medication (was either Proscar OR Flomax) at the time, and it
gave minimal improvement after some time, but no real relief. Over the past
20 years or so, I have been to 3 more urologists ( the first 2 retired on
me, and one I dislike), and have been on both Proscar and Flomax for quite a
few years. The symptoms do not get any better with age.
Now that I am 66, I finally decided I cannot go on without getting the
surgery done that the previous Uros have recommended, but I have been
putting off. My latest urologist did the initial digital exam, said the
prostate was (felt like) no more than 45 grams. He did a Uroflow on me, a
urine retention sonogram on me after the flow test, and the other day he did
a cystoscopy in the office (somewhat unpleasant) I saw the monitor and
watched the entire scope procedure. I saw the neck of the bladder being
pushed up by the bulging prostate below it. The doctor explained to me how
that causes urine to be retained. He explained the bladder losing its
elasticity over the years of it trying to force urine out through the
restricted prostate. Nothing that hasn't already been explained to me over
the years by the other doctors. It was very interesting, however to actually
see the inside of my bladder!
My previous Uro, had some tests done on me last year: a renal sonogram, and
a cystoscopy in the hospital under general anesthesia. That cystoscopy had
brutal after effects, as he used the non flexible scope and must have been
very large in diameter. (still hurts thinking about that one, and its bloody
mess). He seems very indifferent about everything; not what I like in a
doctor.
Anyway, I finally agreed to get the surgery done on July 10th. The new
doctor gave me several options, and the one he said he feels would give me
the best results is a procedure that combines the old standard TURP and the
laser beam. He said it gives very good results, so I chose it over just the
green light laser or the TURP.
I know I have been so very foolish to have put this off all these years
and living like the Flomax TV commercials, or actually much worse. Just that
we value our parts and don't like them to be messed with by cutting them.
I don't expect a miracle, but would be very pleased with one!
I will keep you guys posted

Hi, Bob.
Success -- your post showed up.
Yes, I too have been dodging the knife for some years, but will
probably succumb and undergo a procedure (probably TURP) later this
year.
So please let us know how yours goes!
I'm also interested in how this combo TURP-PVP procedure works.

Hi Ed,
Yeah I posted those in the late morning today, but they and your reply did
not appear for me until tonight; very unusual. I post in other groups
occasionally, but never saw such a long delay.
My company is in the middle of changing health insurance companies, and I
hope I get the info from the new insurance in time for the doctor and
hospital to get the paper work and approvals done. The surgery is enough to
keep my mind occupied without the aggravation of having to be worried that
the surgery will be postponed. I am psyched up to get it done on the 10th.
I will keep you informed here.

Hi guys,
With the reports of some problem procedures, I would like to offer some
encouraging news. Maybe I am a little premature in "rejoicing", but I am
very glad I finally got it done.
Only time now will tell if it fixes my urgency and frequency problems, but
it has to be better than it was
I had a TURP plus laser done yesterday morning.
Woke up in recovery room high as a kite, but that quickly cleared up; no
real pain even after anesthesia wore off, just the discomfort of the
catheter and the inflated balloon thing that keeps it from sliding out of
you.
I don't remember reading anybody mentioning the catheter irrigation system
they used on me: The catheter itself is about 3/8 inch in diameter! didn't
know my pee hole would stretch that much. They run bags of saline solution
from an IV pole into the catheter which constantly drips maybe a drop per
second, sometimes reduced to one drop per 3 to 4 seconds, flows into the
bladder, then the spent fluid flushes the bladder slowly but almost
constantly and empties into an oversized bladder catheter drain bag. Believe
it or not, they ran 9 or 10 3 liter bags (almost 20 liters!) of saline
through this setup and me. The fluid coming out is pinkish, but not red at
all. When the doctor removed the catheter this morning ( I stayed overnight
1 night), he asked me to pass a couple hundred Ml of urine, and said if I
could, I could be discharged without a catheter; if not, they would
re-insert the catheter, and I would have to go back to the doctor Monday
morning. I had very little trouble passing 200 Ml within a half hour or so,
especially after drinking a couple of more glasses of water. I am drinking
lots of water and peeing a lot as per the doctors orders.
My doctor did 3 of these procedures yesterday. 1 other guy was put in the
same room as me, and we discussed our previous experiences with urologists.
Coincidentally, his previous uro was the same uncaring sh.t head I had
before my new doctor. Ramon is right about some doctors. They are not all
that way, fortunately
Right now, I have been home for about 2 hours. Peeing right now is only
slightly stinging, but not as bad as I thought it would be. Great flow!
Urine is mostly normal color, very slight almost no pink in it.
sorry if I gave more info than necessary, but I felt I should tell it all.
Bob
