Saw the urologist Tim Larner at the Hove Nuffield Hospital on Tuesday.
He did a DRE, then had me do a flow-rate test, after which he checked
residual with ultrasound, then I did the IPS questionnaire (scored
17).
(I already had a series of recent PSA results, because of TRT.)
PVP arranged for Jan.13th - at the Ashdown Nuffield Hospital,
Haywards Heath, probably with general anaesthetic (as spinal block
requires use of a catheter afterwards).
He said 15 more Laserscopes had been ordered in the UK - one in Kent,
and the others in Wales and Scotland.
He's done 60 PVP's now, 30% resulting in retro. ejac., zero
incontinence. 10% did not need a catheter after the op.
He operates in the afternoon, and patients stay overnight.
He reckons most will experience 'thin' bleeding for up to 5 weeks
unless they cut out substantial lifting and vigorous exercise in at
least the first 2 weeks.
When discharged he sends patients home with 3 days' supply of
antibiotics and 5 days' of NSAIDs (Voltarol).
(Next time I speak to him I'll ask about PROSED/DS.)
He was a most amiable and affable youngish fella, quite bright-eyed
and bushy tailed. One worry for me is that he's going skiing in the
period just before my op!
W.r.t. private health insurance, I believe BUPA now approves this op,
which helped me persuade my insurer (FirstAssist - formerly Royal &
Sun Alliance) to cover mine.

15 more Laserscopes ordered sounds promising. I have an appointment with a
urologist at an Edinburgh hospital on Friday and I know that they have been
putting a business plan to the accountants. After turning down a TURP nine
years ago I may be about to find the Holy Grail but first I want to try
Avodart.
Good luck with your procedure in January.
Derek.

BUPA? Please let a yank know what that means.
I'm trying to convience my insurance company to cover PVP.
