Hello,

Have been taking Avodart now for about 5 months.
Jury still out if it is helping.
Had tried Flomax previously, but didn't seem to help.

Anyway, was speaking to my Cardiologist today, and he mentioned that
although he isn't a Urologist, he's heard that a combination of
Avodart with Proscar has proven to be the most effective.

Anyone have any thoughts or opinions on this ?

Thanks,
B.

Get a new cardiologist! Obviously this one can't even look up the PDR.

*******

Proscar:

PROSCAR* (finasteride), a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound, is a
specific inhibitor of steroid Type II 5?-reductase, an intracellular
enzyme that converts the androgen testosterone into
5?-dihydrotestosterone (DHT).

Avodart:

AVODART is a synthetic 4-azasteroid compound that is a selective
inhibitor of both the type 1 and type 2 isoforms of steroid
5?-reductase, an intracellular  enzyme that converts testosterone to
DHT.

[the ? in the above is because the Greek "alpha" doesn't translate
well into the current character set and I'm too lazy to investigate
further.]

*********

IOW combining the two would be like taking both Prozac and Effexor
(both SSRI's) for depression.

What he's probably heard is that combining [ONE of either Avodart OR
Proscar] AND one of the alpha-1 antagonists (Flomax, Uroxatral, etc)
is supposedly more efficacious, in fact there are some (dubious)
studies asserting this very point. Personally I'm unconvinced that
such a combination is of general use which is to say that there may be
small minorities for whom this combination will provide relief. IOW,
YMMV.

If you need Greek letters, you can find most of them in a Math font or Symbol
font.

I'm going to step into this sideways.
AVODART tends to cut the PSA by about half.  Make certain you get DRE
to confirm what is going on internally, and that you watch for trends
in your PSA.  Pca can sneak up on you if you are not careful, in spite
of the docs telling you  "you"re fine" when looking only at your PSA
numbers

Hello:

What is "DRE" please ?

What is "Pca" ?

BTW:  if the normal psa test is so distorted, what do most folks request
from their MD in it's stead as being
"good" to have ?

Much thanks for reply and help.
Appreciate it very much.

Bob
