A few days ago, I had been working outside all day, digging and moving
stuff around, and wound up with a sore back. That night, feeling that
the sore back would continue into the next day, I took two aspirins
before going to bed. I woke up the next morning with my sore back
feeling much better. I then realized that I didn't get up during the
night to urinate, as has been my routine for the past few years. I
usually have to get up sometime around 4 AM, or thereabouts, to relieve
myself.
The next night, I tried it again with the two aspirins. Same thing.
Eight hours of sleep without getting up during the night. This has
worked for the past 4 nights, but I still have to make the few trips to
the bathroom in the first couple of hours of the day. I don't know if
this would work for me with the other pain relievers, like ibuprofen, or
acetaminophen, but I have always used aspirin for pain, headaches, and
its reported benefit for cholesterol. I actually take one a day with my
morning medications, vitamins, and supplements, none of which are for
BPH. I don't know if the aspirin is having any effect on the prostate
itself, but just that mid-night trip saver is welcome. BTW, that aspirin
is the generic 325 mg type.
Those of you who cannot take aspirin can try the others to see if it
works for you. Let us know if anything helps

Hi, Bill.
Interesting observation. I have seen similar things with ibuprofen.
Twice I was on ibu long term for other things (like a pinched nerve)
and when coming off the ibu, went into urinary retention shortly
after.
I mentioned it to my uro who dismissed it as a coincidence. He flatly
stated that there is no effect.
But there was a study done by the Mayo Clinic (of men in Minnesota)
that looked at the effect of NSAID use on BPH. They concluded that
NSAIDs helped. Here are links that discuss this study.

Some U of Pittsburgh researchers also think NSAIDs help.

But others say that NSAIDs make the symptoms of BPH worse.

And here is a link that tries to resolve the discrepancy.

Thanks for those links. At least I now know that it wasn't a fluke or
some coincidence.
I guess the one aspirin I take in the morning is wearing off by bedtime.

I take a 'baby' aspirin in the morning too. Why not try it in the evening
instead? I think I remember reading it doesn't matter as long as you do
it the same time every day. I might try that.
I've been taking cranberry cap daily for most of a year now and only go
once a night, right at 3 AM (unless I drink beer) - used to get up three
or four times. (Yes, I know, all in my mind. But if it works for me...)
Maybe an aspirin at bedtime will make it zero times a night.

I think you were dehydrated from the yard work.

Since reading your email I have tried taking a 400mg ibuprofen last thing at
night and do find that it makes a difference. I sleep better and do not
have to get up at all.
