Anyone have experience with this product for BPH by reducing size of
prostate? It's also touted for treating cancers, diabetes and improving
overall immunity. (Yes, it's beginning to sound too good to be true.)
You can google on "concentrated flax hull lignans" for the claims.

I heard of it through the Health Sciences Institute June 2008 print
newsletter. As I write this, that edition hasn't been posted online
(http://hsibaltimore.com/).  It may appear in a couple of days. You can

I am not promoting the newsletter or any of the products it describes.
I'm just curious about your experience with this product. When you go
through the math of Avodart for reducing prostate size vs lignans, the
deal is about the same. Through Medicare, I pay $75 for a three-month
supply of Avodart, which is about the same as for lignans. Why switch?
Fewer side effects, and the multiple other benefits not offered by Avodart.

I don't know if there's any relationship but I frequently add milled
flaxseed (cheap in baking section of grocery stores) to foods as a mostly
taste-free fiber addition. (I have diverticulitis and find that the more
fiber I eat the better I feel.) I've not noticed any effect on my BPH,
with the possible exception of less frequent night bathroom visits, but
I'd been giving cranberry capsules credit for that - hmm, but still... As
to prostate size, I have no idea what it is and avoid PSAs and
urologists.

Too bad the article isn't posted so everyone can read it. Critical
points are:
1) flax hull lignans are not flax seeds; they are in the hull that
surrounds the seed and has been removed from the seeds you buy at retail.
2) one teaspoon of hull lignans contain the nutritional equivalent of
two GALLONS of flax seed! That is a critical difference.

The important lignan is SDG (secoisolariciresinol diglucoside).

Be careful of preground flaxseed. It goes rancid rather fast, as does
the oil. The best bet is to buy the seeds (which have a very long shelf
life) and use one of those cheap ($10-$15) coffee grinders to grind them
just before you use them. Don't use that grinder for anything else.

My girlfriend also has diverticulitis. Has to be real careful to avoid
eating seeds (even in tomatoes, cucumbers, zuccini, etc.) and avoids
black pepper. She's be diagnosed with a wheat (but not gluten) allergy.
Since being off wheat for two years, her bouts of diarrhea and bloating
are much less. She deals with her dairy sensitivity by using Lactaid
tablets. Aspartame (Nutrasweet, Equal) can be a trigger in some people, too.

so the flax seeds I get at Whole Foods come inside a nut that has the
lignans--? is that correct.
