Treating head colds

How do you treat the symptoms of a head cold? I found out years ago that
anti-histamine stops me from urinating. And all the cold remedies I've
looked at contain anti-histamine and/or have enlarged prostate warnings.

TIA

Yep I suffer from the same problem - Sudafed blocks me completely!

I have found Vicks Sinex nasal spray helps my breathing during a cold
without any side effects.

Just to add the UK and US versions seem to be different, in UK the standard
Sinex is  Oxymetazoline, but in US it is  Phenylephrine which is a no-no as
far as my BPH is concerned -- as is the Pseudoephedrine Hydrochloride in
Sudofed.

I believe the US 12 hour version of Sinex uses Oxymetazoline which may be
worth a try.

I checked a few varieties of Sinex packages yesterday and all had the
enlarged prostate warning.

The VA prescribes Flunisolide Nasal Solution USP, 0.025% for me.  One squirt
straight up the nose and one toward the back of the head, on each side.  You
are supposed to do this a while before bedtime, which clears it; one each
day.  Unfortunately, the clearing effect only lasts for about two hours,
much like a lot of other stuff.

The doctor did say I could take the antihistamine with BPH, but only for
three days.

As you hinted, the Flunisolide Nasal Solution USP, 0.025% doesn't sound a
whole lot better than saline nose drops, which I finally remembered being
able to use since I made that initial post. (Haven't had a bad cold for
years.)

Anti-histamine stops my urination within an hour or so of the first dose
(if I recall - shortly anyhow, not days). I was never warned about it and
barely knew I had BPH; having it happen after taking one Allerest <sp?>
(I think) tablet, which I had previously been taking with no problem,
scared the wits out of me. I recovered after several hours if I remember
correctly. I've been very very careful since. I read all the warnings on
everything I take, and still worry.
