HI,
My father is scheduled to go for the Prolieve System treatment (aka
transurethral microwave therapy) for shrinking the prostate in a week.
What are your thoughts about this procedure?
Thank you in advance for any information or leads.

Good Luck. I tried TUMT but didn't do a thing for me.
Targis by Urologix:

But won't hurt to try.
A year later I had PVP. It fixed the problem immediatly.
Let us know how he makes out.
If it doesn't and the present URO doesn't do PVP, start looking for
one that does.

Cooled Thermotherapy and Prolieve System Treatment are other names for
the TUMT (transurethral microwave therapy of the prostate) which is
accomplished by many devices including the Targis, Prostatron,
Thermatrix, and Prolieve systems. You can google any of those names for
more information.
I had Prostatron therapy July 2, 2004 and it helped for a while, but
ended up with PVP October 2005 because the TUMT only cleared about half
of the length of the prostatic urethra. I think it is worth trying, but
you need to consider the fact that a lot of TUMT patients end up with a
PVP or another procedure later anyway. If the TUMT works, you have
attained your objective. If not, then there is always the next step.
Personally, recovery from the PVP was easier than recovery from the TUMT
which may take 3-6 months to really know the true outcome.
How old is your father? How large is his prostate? How long has he had
bph? These questions may have some bearing on the therapy recommended.
If you have not already done so, you might want to review the AAU site
for further information on the various methods and their effectiveness.
