Hi everyone,

This is my first message here, I wanted to share my story with you
guys and then to ask for your help/comments. Here goes:

Around a year ago I suddenly realized that my urine flow was somehow
different. Whereas before I would rush into the bathroom, and just let
it go, now I found that eventhough I felt like urinating, it wasn't
that simple. I would also get up a lot more to urinate during the
night.

And most infuriating, even after waking up for the nth time and
stumbling towards the washroom, I would then realize that although I
really really felt like urinating, I would only get out a small
dribble and a few drops.

I didn't really think much of it, except being very upset and
wondering once in a while what the heck was going on. I think I was
just hoping that it would go back to normal by itself. But once it
didn't after a few months, I went to see my doctor. He lubed up a
gloved hand and for the first time checked my prostate.

Being only 31, I hadn't really thought about my prostate
much....believing that if it were going to give me trouble, it would
be much later.

Anyway, the doctor said my prostate felt fine but just to be sure he
sent me to a specialist.

I sat in that waiting room for more than an hour and finally when I
went it, a crusty 60 year old guy with an English accent came in, not
even looking at me and started to read my file. He then asked me a few
questions and when I answered him with the description of the symptoms
he said point blank, see my secretary, she will set up an appointment
with the hospital.

I said, whaaa? you mean an operation? By this time he was already out
of his chair and holding the door behind him. He turned and said, yes
we have to put a tube up your penis all the way to your prostate and
then to cut it. And with that he left.

I looked at the clock and saw that not even 4 minutes had passed since
I began talking to this guy.

I thought to myself, there is no f@$#ing way you are going near my
prostate, especially with that bedside manner.

So I began my search for a natural method. It wasn't long for me to
find Saw Palmetto extract.

I thought to myself, ok, I'm skeptical. But what do I have to lose?
about $30 and a few weeks. I began taking about 320 mg each day of
85%-95% liposterolic. Since then I have noticed a marked improvement
in my urine flow and my needs to get up at night.

It is NOT 100% (or back to normal) but it feels much better. I no
longer dribble and I can now stand up and urinate again!! Woo Hoo!!

ok, now I wanted to thank you for reading so far and ask for your
help, comment and suggestions.

I'm planning on continuing to take SP (switching to another brand) for
another month to see how it goes.

The thing that I like are: 1] no side effects and 2]improvement

But I'm always open to alternatives. I've found some mentions
regarding beta-sitosterol. But I have no idea what it is nor where to
get it. I am also a little concerned by the side effect of impotence
it may have.

Second, was my doctor incompetent to tell me my prostate was fine? I
mean, I have all the symptoms of BPH, so shouldn't he have 'felt' my
prostate was enlarged?

I am also concerned that I have this condition (BPH) at such a young
age! I think of myself young at 31 and wonder if I have this now what
the hell is waiting down the road for me at 40, 50 and 60?!?!

Anyway, I'll stop now and hope to receive your feedback. Thanks again.

Cheers

Raphael...

Because of your age, I would strongly suggest you find a better urologist
and fully investigate the situation in order to rule out cancer.

If you have BPH, and Saw Palmetto works for you, there are a couple of other
substances that might increase its efficacy.  I have used them for a few
years in conjunction with SP, and the combination has completely eliminated
BPH symptoms without side effects.  One of them is Pygeum Africanum.  The
other is Nettle Root extract (Urtica dioica).  I take SP in the morning, and
these two substances in the evening.  They are available on-line from
http://www.vitacost.com.

About once a year, I wean myself from this regimen to get a baseline on the
un-treated BPH.  I'm going through that right now, and it is most
unpleasant.  The above combination has worked very well for me.

Good Luck,

John

Raphael,
I had similar symptoms beginning at age 27.  Fortunately my urologist were
calling it prostatitis and just gave me a ton of antibotics to take.  By the
time I was 40, I was old enough for my urologist to call my condition BPH.
It continued to get worse and worse. My flow was down to less than 5 ml/sec
and my frequency was once per hour. Urgency was constant and residual was
considerable.
By the fall of 2001 I was desperate.  I had an unsuccessful TUMT.  I was
avoiding TURP but felt it was inevitable.  Then I found out about Laserscope
PVP from this newsgroup and the rest is history and well documented on this
newsgroup.

I encourage you to learn about your condition.  Go see a progressive
urologists who will really diagnois your condition correctly.  Don't let
anybody say that you are too young to have BPH, because your not.
And don't jump at any treatment until you know what is best for you.  You
are a young man and you don't want to have any compromises or sideeffects in
treating your condition.  But don't ignore the problem.  If it is BPH it
will only get worse.  No amount of Saw Palmetto or Beta-Situsoid will get
rid of a blockage caused by an enlarged prostate.

Good luck and best wishes to getting rid of this nasty condition.  A lot of
people here have paved a path for you on this newsgroup.  Use the
information provided and follow your own path.

Best Regards,

Patrick

I'm 35 and have a similar story.  For the last few years I've suffered the
symptoms of BPH and have been to two different Urologists. One Uro said I
had a urethra stricture, another said I had a primary bladder neck
obstruction (same thing).  They both indicated that the prostate probably
caused this condition.  Neither one diagnosed BPH due to my age, yet both
said that my prostate seemed a little big.  My PSA was less than 1, so
cancer was ruled out.  After being diagnosed with a stricture, I was
prescribed hytrin and I started taking saw palmetto.  The combination of
these drugs immediately improved my urinary output and decreased the number
of times I had to get up in the night.  Over the last couple of years I've
done a considerable amount of research on the prostate and have since
changed my diet, lost 50 pounds, cut back on red meat, and quit drinking
alcohol and coffee.  This change in diet has also helped tremendously.

I would recommend that you see another urologist, one that doesn't recommend
surgery without trying all of the other alternatives.  You can have many
symptoms of BPH without having an overly large prostate.  Even a minor
change in prostate size can have a major affect on the urinary function of
some men.  Everyone is different.

Thank you all for your feedback. It is much appreciated as I am just
starting to learn about this condition.

I will take all your comments very seriously and research further.
Eventhough I wish there was a small pill I could take to solve this,
my common sense tells me that nothing can be that simple. This is why
I am still looking for answers (eventhough I'm taking saw palmetto and
it has helped).

One of the important changes that I'm making is (as was mentioned) to
cut down drastically on meat and animal fat. Instead I'm substituting
carbs, greens and fruit and protein sup (like tofu). I won't be easy
as I simply love red meat and BBQ'ing :o)

But I take my health seriously and must act now if I will be healthy
when I'm old and seeing my grand kids grow up.

There is one thing I forgot to mention in my initial message. My
doctor did send me to a clinic for an ultrasound test. I'm not sure
what the medical name of it is but I had to drink lots and lots of
water (to get my bladder full) and then trying to put images of
Niagara Falls out of my mind, lie on a bed while a nice lady put cold
cream on my crotch area and slid around an ultrasound wand. Whatever
it was, it produced nothing to alarm my doctor.

And finally I wanted to request that you explain some of the jargon
(PSA, TURP, etc.) since I have no idea what they mean!! Thanks again
guys.

Do Google search on BPH.  You will find many sites that will explain what
all those initials stand for.  Below are a couple of links to get you
started.

Thanks for the links. I'm getting more acquainted with them as I
continue to surf the web and read more about BPH.

I just remember something else. About a year ago I stopped taking
anti-depressants (celexa). I'd been on it for about 2 years. During
that time I noticed that it had an affect on my sexual performance
(delaying climax). This was one of the side effects that my doctor had
told me about so I wasn't surprised.

But now I wonder...if it affected things down there, might it have
also triggered an 'early' BPH for me? Are there any known links
between antidepressants and BPH?

Cheers
